Carbon Monoxide detectors

Ours was going off when the missus got home today, she phoned National Grid to make everything safe (isolating gas supply); will hopefully find out tomorrow what caused it to go off if the letting agents can get an engineer out

Meanwhile, just got to sit in the cold until work in the morning

Don't want to dwell too much on how our health would have held out had we not got a detector

ive been to a few houses where the punters have nearly snuffed it due to faulty boilers and gas fires . sometimes the fumes just give u a bad hedache and u notice but other times it just makes u sleep and its goodnight vienna it may be a faulty alarm if its out of date but prudent to have all checked out

A few years back a local guy, his wife and teenage daughter were found dead in their home due to carbon monoxide, it hits home when you know the family and that was the week I bought a detector.

It was a modern bungalow with a relatively new boiler system, I think the inquest identified some amateur installation or modification had been done, possibly to save a few quid.

every boiler we fit has to have a new Co detector fitted Its the Law in Scotland now.

I recently fitted new smokes and co alarms all round the house after getting an extension built.

With 2 log burners and the new boiler now in the house I am not taking any chances.

A mate of mine round the corner doesnt have one and when he recently got his boiler serviced it was reading over 900 ppm CO !! Lucky it was in his garage which has the door open a lot of the time.

The new engineer immediately condemned the boiler and fitted a new one.

The worry is that numerous ppl on our estate have the same boilers and one of the primary reasons for the high CO level was an overly long flue pipe going out the side of the house which caused fumes to back flow and remix into the boiler.

Scary stuff !!

And you would think a long flue would be better! Just goes to show!

At least with living in rented accommodation it is all sorted out and paid for us. Apparently the National Grid guy last night remarked that the boiler was a dinosaur, with any luck it will just be replaced

Don't forget that the majority of carbon monoxide detectors need to be replaced every few years (as they use a chemical process to detect the gas, and they eventually lose sensitivity). The more expensive ones use semiconductor detectors which last much longer.

the last 5 houses ive rewired specified a carbon monoxide detector to be fitted in the sitting room near the chimney breast , all well and good theres no gas fires in the sitting rooms and the boilers are in the kitchen if thats where they want them thats where they go
