Caravan holiday,Anyone?

Thought you guys would like this,I brit friend of mine has lived in the USA around thirty years now, Very versatile chap. His first ten years or so he was sales manager at a big Las Vegas dealership, Then moved on, He's owned restaurants, shoe shops, florists shops, Hairdressing salons etc, etc, the last few years he's been a long distance artic driver self employed, Just last month started another own business delivering caravans anywhere in the states, Swapped his last years pick up truck for a new Dodge ram 3500, Dual rear wheels and 7.6ltr cummins diesel, He is loving it, Caravans etc are either tow-ball (2-5/16 dia. or fifth wheel with the hitch in th truck bed, I think his towing limit is 12,000lbs, Here is a photo he sent me of one of the deliveries from Indiana to Alabama, Caravan has three electric slide out sections, Making it massive once on site,

That is a beast, we had a V10 Ram while in Alaska one year, great toys. I seen some videos where they drag race those big Cummins motors with horse power in the 1000s

Had a cousin in law who sold mobile homes in Reading Pennsylvania he used to ship them all over they were HUGE came with everything down to lining, crockery, everything except the food

Kent, I'll see if my mate can lose one in transit, He usually rings me from his mobile when on long trips once a week or so. Cant get him off the line, Calls at least ninety minutes each time, Retcons it only costs him a couple of "bucks" per call, must be a good mobile package,

Would a Navara/hi lux/ranger ECT pull that over here with a mini fifth wheel instead of a load bed , or would you be looking at Dodge Ram / short bed 7.5 tonnes .

As a side note I overtook a Land Rover discovery pulling a massive twin wheel caravan .... I'm sure it was longer than the full size artic rig I was driving !

Went to Canada a few years back , the demountable camper bodies mounted on pick up trucks are really popular .

There are a few about, not popular though. A mate considered one for his companies Navaro a while back, but never bought one in the end.

A mate of mine had a de-mountable over 25years ago, they used it quite a bit for going to equestrian shows etc, for over-night stay's. Don't think they actually used it for holidays, `but it was a nicely built unit and slept two, `````quick and simple, put the legs down and drive the truck away,

I used to have a Romahome demountable camper on a tiny 550cc Honda Acty pick-up. The camper was like the Tardis inside - wished I'd kept the body and put it on another pick-up when the Honda fell apart but sold it for £350 to somebody who had a Bedford Rascal pick-up.
Not as easy to quick to demount as you'd think. Jacks had to lift quite high because pick-up rose as body weight was taken on them. It was very unstable in this high position so reckon the slightest knock when moving the pick-up could have caused it to topple over. No way would I ever have attempted to remove the camper body when away from home as just too risky.

Mate in America just emailed me, Picked up his next huge tri-axle 5th wheel caravan, He is taking it to Louisiana on monday. When he has overnight trips he just sleeps in the caravans on the way,

Hi, After a quick google, they weigh depending on spec, 12000 to 13000lbs which is 5.5 to 6 tonnes. So would need careful selection of tractor unit to keep below C1+E limit of 8250kgs.

My USA mate called me just this minute, He has put 15,000 miles on the truck in a month, He said the caravan manufacturer he delivers for Make around 54,000 units a year, He has an app on his phone for finding the best diesel prices, Retcons he can save 50cents per gallon over the big fuel stations, Don't know what his truck holds but he has an extra 105 gallon custom made tank, filter and pump bolted down in the truck bed,

Our storeman has just bought an American truck to take his house on wheels round Europe. The truck is huge, can't remember the make. The house on wheels(caravan) is also huge, I do think it's bigger than some folks houses. His plan is to retire and travel wherever the truck points

It's not the size of the caravan you've got to worry about, it's the size of the car they're towing
