caravan chassis trailer project

hi guys im very new to welding and just bought a kende Fan Cooled MIG Welder 150A i have a freind who has a old trailer that was made from a caravan chassis but it is totally knackerd all the wood it rotten and the floor gone it has a brake cable on it but it dosent look although it has been in use since there was a caravan was attached to it and it dosent have a hand brake
my freind knows very little about it as he was just giving it when a family freind died


i have a l200 pickup and go to alot of poultry sales and always carting tin sheets and sand and gravel about in the back of the pickup.

for sometime now i have been on the look out for a ifor trailer but there so
expensive and couldent warrent paying that kind of money im only 20 aswell so with the licence i have i wouldent be able to pull a big braked trailer any ways


so i was thinking of doing the one up my freind has got he says i can have it for what he would get for it scap which he reckons would be £40.00 I was looking for some advice on what i should be warey of e.g wheels seized small weigh limit.

its very rusty underneath but quite structurally sound apart from the wood i have hit the metal hard with a hammer and none has give way ?? any advice you could give me e.g problems i could come across would be great

G'day Mark' how you going?,
I would try to use Utes for tools, Trailers for loads. make one. make two even as long as you get each wheel centre square with the hitch it can as on the **** as you like. Aim for a square trailer however but don't stress too much if it off by mm or two. the frame be made and then use the frame as a jig for the next frame. cut your sheet steel and glue it on wire it up and suspension/ wheels. will need to check local regulations with regard to draw bars etc.
paint sell one to pay for both. as for the trailer youve been offered pictures would help.

id check out in more detail how big a trailer you could tow before you do anything ! i know i could have one just a bit bigger than a postage stamp with my van ......

Whats the gross weight of your l200?

Correct me if i'm wrong,but i think theres a law change coming up in oct this year about homemade/modded trailers not sure if it covers ex caravans chassis.
Also you might wanna check your insurance see if your covered for towing a trailer i thought i was till i double checked,found out i wasn't.

you would be stuck to 750KG or the difference between 3500KG and the gross of the tow vehicle

there isn't much weight in a caravan chassis when its striped to steel

I'm planning on building a bike trailer soon using a pair of 3/4 ton Indespension units I bought years ago.

What's the latest on this please? I really don't want to fall foul of any new laws since I have an HGV Class 1 licence and VOSA would likely say I should have known better!

I had thought about doing that since it means only needing space for one trailer; a removable box on the chassis and the job's a good 'un
