A work mate years ago took his sierra to kwik fit for tyres - they informed him his shocks were all knackered and needed replacing . ..go ahead, fine.
Turned up to collect, they presented him with the bill . . he presented them with the receipt and two year warranty for the shocks they fitted last year . . .

But having said that, I've always had good service and prices from them - admittedly one did try telling me the suspension on my integrale was bent and needed replacing - correct in that they are supposed to be bent . . .

But I nowadays go to a local-ish garage that I picked out of the phone book for an MOT 20 yrs ago when I moved over this way - He rarely actually does any work on my cars, but we get on well - I pay up his reasonable prices fr tyres and MOTS, he does me the odd favour - all good

I don`t know if this has any bearing on the fact that some garages "try it on". When I was repairing welding machines one thing that Reg Hayward (ESAB) drilled into us was that you never say that somthing needs replacing when you know fine well it doesn`t. One day you will get caught out, I kept my level three untill I retired.

More substantiated claims yet again, do you do anything other than make vexatious suggestions and claims? note no facts to substantiate it again.

I just thought that the chances of knowing someone who had that level of detail about the decision making process of the DVSA, about this exact same issue being discussed here, would be slim.

It also didn’t really sound right to me, I can’t see that fleet cars would have any bearing in the decision making process of this - they only keep the cars for 3 years (4 at a push), so not sure why they would even be a consideration - even if they said a 5 year limit it would make no difference to the majority of fleet operators. No mention of any technical points from the actual manufacturers over the life of the tyres, which I would thought would be the biggest factor.

So on to MOT`s. Do you get concered about advisories. For instense I took my car for a MOT who I have a service contract with,and they suggested it needed several things doing.Going to cost the earth. Took it to a local garage for one or two things to be done ,like engine mounts and I asked about the disc brakes,the answer was they are ok. So who do you trust

Too many folk rely on the annual test to find out what is wrong with their car, in reality it should be in a roadworthy condition at all times. Any decent fitter worth his/her salt would highlight or fix "advisories" when servicing a vehicle, a tester should only need to pass or fail a vehicle on test day, its all that happens with trucks.

Had a good one at KwikFit where I'd bought a set of wheels and tyres for the Land Rover, I didn't want the tyres but did want the wheels. In the SE (pre Bob) couldn't find anyone who was reasonable to swap the tyres over for me so was just going to wait until I wore out the set of BFGs on there and buy new.

Ended up finding someone who wanted the tyres and also worked at a vineyard who could swap them but not balance so drove down there and duly swapped the tyres all around. Waaay out of balance so booked in at KwikFit one lunchtime for a balance. Arrive to be told they can't balance them because they're aggressive offroad tyres. I replied "so an 80 year old mechanic operating out of a shed in Wales can balance them perfectly on a bubble gauge but a national company with all the latest and greatest laser this laser that can't?" After some muttering under his breath he said he'd do the best they could but no guarantees.

Anyway the 110 goes into the bay and they jack up the rear end and then proceed to try and remove the wheels, end up with opposite wheels just spinning. Eventually they get it off and start balancing. Manager then comes in again and informs me that he felt he should mention that my handbrake is not working.

"Funny, so why wasn't that picked up on the MOT yesterday then?"
"no idea, perhaps you should ask the garage?"
"I am..."
"I don't follow"
"You MOTd it yesterday"
"Oh"

I then pointed out the handbrake is a prop brake and the rear diff is an open diff so of course you'll get the wheels spinning like you did. "what's a prop brake?". I then had to give him a lesson on how differentials and the like work.

Oh that's interesting thanks for telling me (at least he thanked me). Must be a new thing then when did they start doing that? Um, 1948 to the present day...

Cue they finally balanced all the wheels and the fitter comes in and the whole conversation repeats

As commercial vehicles were being discussed it doesn't apply to cars, that is unless you know of any cars weighing in at over 3.5 tonnes.

From my contact at the DVSA:

He claimed when they looked at this they found that the average mileage was 10.000 miles per annum and cars in everyday use used a set just over every 2 years, the anomoly was that while front whel drive cars wore their front tyres out quicker due to the steering, braking, and drive forces loading there front tyres much higher than rear wheel drive cars, on a rear wheel drive you take away the driving forces and put these on the rear tyres so they wear the rear tyres differently.
He further claimed that as most cars are front wheel drive now they had to look at such compromises between FWD and RWD cars, and that various manufacturers such as BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes Benz still produced RWD cars so this had to be factored in as most company cars were BMW 3 series with RWD or 4WD and this would hit businesses hard and they would object.

They concluded that most RWD cars with low mileages would replace there tyres in less than 4 years and FWD cars in less than 3 years and this was the reasoning behind this decision as the majority of car owners would easily replace there tyres in less than 5 years.

Its already in, having classic trucks meant it was of interest.

From Jan 2021 all trucks over 3.5T must have tyres on steeering axles less than 10 years old.
This means all front tyres on 8 leggers and Chinese sixes.

Exemptions are for classic trucks over 40 years old which can have any age tyre on as long as they are in good condition.
If they are over 40 years old and in commercial service this exemption doesn't apply.

PSV's are defined as buses, minibuses, and coaches.
They have to have tyres fitted which are less than 10 years old.
this applies to all the above with single wheels.
If they have twin rear wheels then it alters.
Front steering tyres have to be less than 10 years old and it says nothing about twin rear wheels which means the tyres can be of any age.
This needs testing in the high court to set a legal precedent along with trucks pre 1960 which need no MOT.

All tyres fitted need a manufacturing date clearly marked on the tyre which is visible at all times, of this is scraped off the tyre is illegal so if you kerb the tyre it can be rendered illegal, and these can be checked at anytime including at the roadside.

I found the "made in Rhodesia" 5.50/600 - 19" Dunlops on my Dodge rather hard and lacking in grip, but they don't seem to be wearing down!
