If i remember correctly I think it says that you need to cancel the direct debit in your bank account if you have one set up. I’m sure I had it say that to me once when I sorn’d something.
Every time I've SORNed on the last day, they usually take the next months payment, but then refund it pretty soon after. I've never stopped the monthly direct debit myself, but it has always stopped.
I run a few cars, some winter only, some summer only, so I tax them monthly - done quite a few stop/starts over the years. Used to be annoying when the refund arrived as a cheque as all the banks in town have closed, meaning a trip somewhere else.
Direct Debit is requested by the business, once the DD is set up, unless there is a end date etc it will or could be collected, so if you have scorned the vehicle, then they should not call the DD, but there has to be a reasonable time delay, several working days prior to the dd request, but as already mentioned they (DVLA) are fairly quick to pay back, if taken and not due. a Standing Order is set up by you and you have to stop, as its not called for by the company, its paid by the bank on your behalf.
It's probably to late to stop it going out today then
The Surf is now uninsured and untaxed due to the incompetence of an insurance company wrongly putting a fault claim on me for a no fault accident in 2020!
(Daft French student bint in a ZIP car hit my parked van.)
I'm refusing to pay extra for something not my fault and after dozens of phone calls and emails not one of the useless tossers can or will help.
Complaints are ongoing to the MIB.
I'm fed up with this world and all the cretins that now inhabit it.
Well guess what?
They've taken the money for next months tax even after the car was sorned.
Apparently it can take 8 weeks to get a refund by cheque!!!
A cheque? What **Language**ing century are these thieves living in?
Never had a cheque, always just credited to my bank account.
They can't stop the direct debit if you cancel that late, already gone through their system, I've done it a few times and usualy have the refund in a couple weeks.
Direct Debits are queued a couple of days in advance, so even if cancelled the day before, the payment will most likely still go through even if you cancel it with your own bank.
The whole car tax thing is a con. Do they seriously think that when change of ownership can be done immediately online that we all beleive they cant adjust tax to the day?
So if you sell a car on 5th of a month, they refund you from the 1st of the next month and the new owner gets charged from the 1st of the current month. Its virtually fraud as its double charging for the same product.
Of course, you can faff doing it all on the 30th/31st and 1st but life doesnt work like that.
They should have left it so the tax stayed with the car.
