TBH it's not a bad thing. Many small cars have not been clean in any way or form. Case and point the current euro 6 1.4 diesel polo. Euro 6 what a joke.

Road fund licence? Is this the 1960s? It's been Vehicle Excise Duty (i.e. a fine for daring to use a vehicle) for decades - and the guvmint is under no obligation to spend that income on the infrastructure. Still, mustn't grumble; there was talk of VED for OWNING a vehicle, even if it was in a million bits in crates, a few years back...

May also delay people from buying brand new for a bit. An interesting set of stats on the radio this morning: average age of a car in:
UK; 6yrs
Germany; 10yrs
USA; 12yrs.

The abundance of hire purchase/finance was quoted as a big reason for our high rate of attrition. That does seem like a very young fleet though

id like to know where all the rising costs will end, it cant go on forever, things go up far more then wages increase so sooner or later there has to be a point where people can no longer pay out any more then they already do, the world will be bankrupt

I never even considered the road fund when buying a car sight unseen on the bay of e a couple of years ago. Two coaches and long hours south journey to Swindon to the seller. On-line bank transfer . . . then on-line taxing of car . . . five hundred and five quid!!!!!!!!!! Now £515! I've bought, and sold, entire cars for less!

It does make more sense to me to have a more standardised rate, we are all taxed per gram of co2 almost directly via fuel duty anyway.

Do they though? I'm always surprised when I look at inflation compensated costs to find out how expensive most things used to be in years gone by. Housing probably really was cheaper though.

I think most people ws the same but I can see that changing as people start to look after their finances more

Well with only two current models in the UK for hydrogen fuel cell cars and about 6 pumps around the UK you would have thought this would have occurred when there was a viable solution for motorists.

Why don't they just scrap road tax and just put up the cost of fuel to make up the difference ?

Then they would only be administrating 1 tax scheme rather than 2 so if would be cheaper to run the scheme, the more miles you do the more you pay and if you choose to drive a gas guzzler then it hurts your wallet more.

Just so you know I personally would be worse off as both my bikes and one of my cars are currently tax exempt, but I still think it would be a better & fairer system.

There is no such thing as a zero emission vehicle, behind every electric car is a bloody great polluting power station & the hydrogen will be from a "nice" clean oil refinery. It's just a case of moving the pollution away from London, Birmingham, Manchester etc to some other poor suckers backyard. Nimby'ism rules OK

A story I like to tell... ;O)
My house was built in 1976 and cost £6500. At the time, the then-new Lotus Esprit was £12000.
In 2004 I bought myself an old Esprit as a 40th birthday pressie. A few months later the last Esprit rolled off the line costing £50,000. Houses here were by then pushing £80,000.

Because that would be a 'fair' system, not a profitable one..?
Fuel theft would be through the roof.
People would realise how expensive the whole 'personal transport' thing was and either stay at home (tax-unprofitable) or use mass transport (tax-unprofitable). As it is the revenue is there in two streams, one whether you drive or not and one whenever you do.
And with the 'managed' motorways coming in, I'm firmly of the belief that there'll be more - a lot more - cost to come... no way are they building all this infrastructure just to make sure we all roll along at x MPH and avoid queues.
