Car roof rack locks

Anyone got any bright ideas on removing locked on roof bars without a key before I hit the lock with a cobalt drill? Leaving them on isn't an option as the noise at speed is driving me nuts!

Dead easy to pick with a lock picking rake. Any locksmith could do it in seconds or you could pick up a set and follow instructions on Youtube.

Might be worth a go, if I can get the barrels out I might be able to replace them.

Had same problem with mine (from Aldi/lidle ?)
Drill the heads off the rivets (top left of lock) They are about 25/30mm long
If you try and force the lock you will bend or break the key as it's only brass.
Mine had to come off after 3 years ! as new co car was due.
When re fitting have the locks pointing to rear to avoid ingress into lock

I agree very simple to do. £15 for a set of picks.

Sorry did not read your post fully. Thought yours were jamed up. Still you should be able to get it apart if you take head off rivet (if picking does not work) then tap out with pin punch the rivets.

Or use a small flat screwdriver and a paperclip...

Depends on the lock but yes can be done!
When I was young and stupid I used to lock teachers briefcases or open the combination ones and then change the numbers - all for fun of course!

As mrfuzzy says, ram a large screwdriver in there and turn it with moles. Did that two weeks ago on a Merc sprinter with a snapped ignition key to get the guy home.

what brand of roofbars? I ask as some only have one or 2 key options only....

No brand marks or lock numbers sadly.

Well, I spent the day cleaning the car and polishing the yellow sunburnt headlights, I'll attack the roof rack tomorrow.

If you have not already wrecked the lock then it should be possible to remove them with out the key. The key simple uncovers a hole that a VERY long allen key goes through. You should be able to drill out a hole in the red cam and then insert allen key (the long key would have come with the bars !).am has bleached
Note the red cam has bleached white where the hole is !

Thanks for that, the roof rack was exactly the same as the one you have, unfortunately I have already cut it off! The locks were corroded and locked shut.

Don't try to force the key to turn as the keys are very flimsy and will break.
You will need to try the tip I suggested in post 13.
Water and other crap gets driven into the lock and mechanism causing it to jam.

Can you not screw a large self tapper in and use s slide hammer to rip them out?

Buy a FARAD roof rack. Put a load on it and the POS will ping off on it's own!

Having liked that ^^^ I remembered that my E61 came with a set of Thule Aero bars with cracked locking feet, how the previous owner did it I know not.
