Hi, I'm just in the process of taking the wings off my MGA in preparation for a respray. They a reasonable but the flange at the wheel arch is starting to rot. Although the outside off the wing is unaffected just the flange where mud can sit. Is it possible to repair this by welding a strip around the arch or will I need to cut into the wing and splice a repair panel in. Obviously I would prefer the former as it involves less work. Has any one experience of doing this ?

Do you mean the lip where the outer wing joins the inner wheel arch? In many cars these are spot welded and once you start prodding about you may find that the inner wheel arch itself is corroded too. As siggested, a photo would help.
Sorry , not a very good pic. I've marked where the flange is rotten similar to the wheel arch . Its bolted on to the valance but on the wheel arch its just the flange, a friend suggested fibre glass but I don't like that idea. I would prefer to weld a repair, any suggestions would be most welcome

Wing bolts on if I remember correctly take them off & have a good look, after cleaning off all paint, if that is all the rust you find you have a whole team of guardian angles
A twin cam MGA was the most sole destroying re build we ever did rust was its first name, then alloy worm in the cylinder head
& to cap it all it was mineral blue, hated the color & it hated us!! 7 months after giving it back to customer it came out in micro blisters All over, we had to strip it again to bare metal & re paint, never had much luck with dark blues there was a Lancia Beta in dark\midnight blue, but that another story

You say you're in the process of taking the wings off in prep for a respray,so why not take the wing off then post a pic of what your on about.
I got an idea of what you're on about and cannot see a problem for the MOT if thats what your worried about?

If its all sound other than that it will resist a good stabbing with and old screwdriver or the likes. As I say, for me its a golden rule as even if you effect a repair you are back to that area again and again. If it was say a chassis I should go at it with a decent chipping hammer or the likes. Oh yeah I have been deceived before by a little scabby patch !
