Car Floor Pan

Hi Guys,

A friend of mine has an old banger. Need the floor pand welding. Not the whole lot.

For MOT purposes. Can I just lap weld on top from inside the car or must I lap join and weld from underneath.

Just wondered if it mattered. - As long as its a weld all the way round I see no difference at all.

I will waxoll the bottoms anyway. And take to a different garage.

Your advice appreciated.

You'd be better off cutting a panel to suit the hole and butt welding, making sure you get enough penetration so the weld is visible from below.

If you only weld on top the examiner won't see a weld underneath and he may be inclined not to pass it. If you've already had a fail and it comes up on his computer he may also smell a rat.

He may be satisfied if he can see the weld fromm inside though, just leave the carpets up.

Thanks for the info. The garage knows my welding that I will be taking it to. Just wondered what you guys though as you know your stuff. Yes I may butt weld.

Can see where you are coming from. I've thought about that in the past and have tended to put the welds where the MOT man can see them even where that was inconvenient (makes no difference to strength which side of the panel they are on).

If you can pull the carpet up to show the weld I can't imagine any MOT man would fail an overlap weld done from the easy side. Bit of seam sealer on the bottom and I wouldn't imagine they would question it in the first place.

Malcolm is right use seam sealer underneath, Continuous weld inside, and hammer it up underneath and put a couple of stiches on it to to close any gap's
then then grind any high spot's off and seamsealer the joint's........An M.O.T. tester cannot remove the seamsealer to examine any weld...Have'nt had any come backs in 20 years!

If your car has failed a test due to needing to be welded, and you weld it then cover the weld with seam sealer, underseal or whatever, the tester is within his right to fail that vehicle again as he CANNOT view the work that was carried out, best idea is to leave your carpet or whatever out, no sealer or anything, let him see the bare weld, when it passes then use your sealer.

So medlar as i'm doing repairs/welding to my van (Mk5 tranny) now while we have nice weather MOT is due march 2011(posscrapweather) i'm to leave it unprotected till then so he can see my repairs,i think not,its gonna get as much black stuff sloshed around underneath as possible.
Mind you saying this it passed it last test,how i dont know,it wasn't my van then.
BTW can i use black bituminous paint,seeing as i have 10lts of it

I wouldn't cover an mot failure,until its been retested .if you decide before the test something needs welding ,then use seam sealer straight away ......don't leave a transit floor that long

mate if you read my post correctly it said " if your vehicle FAILED its M.O.T" not " if you want to do welding 7 months prior to an M.O.T being due.

Anyway, if you or anyone else does your welding and its wet/damp weather, my mate who is an M.O.T tester says to cover your welds/patches with old engine oil, it will protect the metal from the elements and leave the work visible to a tester. Once through the tewst the oil can be wiped off then painted or sealed with whatever you wish to use.

Hi "Mate" just welded another M.O.T. failure tonight, Both sills at the rear of a Daihatsu Fourtrack....Continuous welded, seam sealered, and undersealed, the garage owner who failed the vehicle was not present whilst I did the job but he Is quite happy to issue a pass certificate in the morning!
I have carried out work for the same garage for 20 years, and also done repairs for re-tests at other garages, and occassionally have some commercial vehicles re-tested at the local V.O.S.A testing station.......and "ALL" using the same technique with no comeback!!!!!!!!!
Sooooo your "MATE" the M.O.T tester claims it's best to leave the repair bare until the tester examines it and put "OIL" on the repair until you get it passed the "tewst" then take it off to apply seamsealer etc!.... Either he's on strong medication or .........Your avin a laaaarf!

well mate seeing as you do a lot of welding for M.O.Ts i assume you know plenty of testers, go and ask for a look at the testers manual, or just ask IF a tester can FAIL welding due to not being able to see it, then come back and tell me i am having a laugh

This is my understanding also! but if the tester has any doubts he could use the "Corrosion Assesment Tool" to lightly tap the repair to check it's soundness!.........Thats if he knows what to listen for?
