Car Dolly

well ive always wanted to own a car dolly, and thought i might make building one a project. has anyone had any attempts at this or has any ideas how i would start or what metal to use and if my clarke 90en would be up to the job? thanks ian

Do you mean a towing dolly or a device for moving the car around the garage &c?

The little clarke would NOT be up to the job, to be honest Ian, plus, I'm not too sure but I think there's new or recent laws about building trailers. (Anyone?) and if thats the case I'm sure a towing dolly would be in the same class.
I've built a few trailers in the past and used a lot more than 90 amps. And you've also got the added headache of sorting brakes out on a dolly. I'd get a few spools of wire under your belt before attempting stuff that carries a load.

Hi,

be aware that they're not exactly legal...

but I was looking at doing something similar a while back.

I checked lots of listings on ebay, gathered a few photos of different designs and drew up something combining all of the best bits. Then I found a cheap scrap one and repaired it!

I had it kicking around the back garden for a year or two, only used it once so I punted it out through ebay.

Some of them are very simple designs, it'd depend what sized vehicles you intended to pull on it.

well, borderline, most of the metal would be less than 2mm.

I thought the new rules don't come in to force until next year. It's not a good time to consider making new ones to sell as a business, but I reckon we could all get away with making one-offs for ourselves for a few years yet.

Use old parts and it'd be difficicult to prove it wasn't made before the new laws came in, etc.

thanks for the replies, i will check on the new laws when i go for my training (training for the police) then going into traffic police. will have a look around on ebay.

New trailer laws are not in force yet. As of April 09 European Whole Vehicle Type Approval was optional only, and will probably only be taken up by those manufacturers who regularly sell to multiple countries within the EU. This will save them from having to apply for individual approvals from each country.

Stamp the date on it now Glyn, and you'll be covered
