Car breakers policies on engine supplies...

I'm ringing around local breakers for a s/h engine. The ones I've spoken to so far have told me they want my knackered engine back in exchange - first time I've come across this.
One guy wanted £350 plus my unit, another £300 plus my unit, I don't find the prices unfair but they can go whistle if they're expecting the knackered engine back.

Has anyone else had this?

i had similar when sourcing a replacement engine for my dads hilux. Most people wanted the dead engine but i wanted to keep it as a project to fix while it wad out then sell to recover losses.

in the end ebay was my friend

Depending what engine and what is wrong with yours there may be better options

Gearboxes yes, engines never had to.
tell them it threw a rod out the side of the block, ran on no oil and screwed the camshfaft journals, boiled the head, and whatever else you can make up.

I haven't had to buy an engine for over a year, but this is a new one on me. Its a DV4TD engine. Nothing special.

Surely they'd include that in the cost of the sale if you wanted to buy with no part-ex?.

One said £40 surcharge. I just think the principal is all wrong, its certainly a new fadd, if I buy something second hand I expect to own it outright.

European paperwork infecting yet another area of our lives, is what it is.
I had it straight from a used battery guy - I asked him for a couple of semi-dead batteries to fiddle with and he said once he's taken a battery in he can't give it back out, but if I could give him another totally dead one, he'd let me have a semi-dead, to keep his numbers straight.

With engines it's more likely they can get decent money for the old engine from a remanufacturer, they are always looking for core for service exchange programmes and the like.

In that case they could put a surcharge on the engine, refundable on receipt of the old one.

Could be they want to clean the old one up and sell it to the next punter?

ive bought and knacked a few vehicles just for parts kept some bits sold others and took the shell in . its good if u have the room to do it but no good if u just have a back garden to cut em up

Talking to a bloke I know the other day. He'd had some Gov bod, round asking about the 2 cars he had outside his premises. Was told he couldn't break more than 2 vehicles at anyone time even if they are for his own use.
