Car battery gone

My dads Kia Rio battery failed yesterday and need to get a repacement. It seems the proper part is an 027 size, 60Ah AGM type at £150-£200 ! He doesnt care for the start stop feature and just wants to fit a normal £60 60Ah 027 type.

Any issues with this?

Yes, agm have a higher charging voltage so an 027 will get overcharged.
I'm not a drama queen but, at best, you won't get a decent lifespan from the new battery. At worst, you'll have acid on the paintwork..

Pobably a way around it. On vw's for example you can tell the car what type of battery is fitted.

Another possible issue, can he actually disable the stop-start? He may not want to use the feature but just swapping the battery will not deactivate it. You'll either chew through the new battery quicker or you'll have a constant stop-start error message on the dash.

As an aside, I recently replaced the agm on my works truck. It had lasted far longer than any normal battery I had had before. Although the price of the replacement was nasty I went like-for-like as it was actually very good value for money (new agm has a 5yr warranty)

Also, you don't say how old the car is.
He might not like the start/stop (I hate it) but, if the car is not that old and it's killed the battery, all those start/stops have probably saved him a few quid in fuel.

Sorry to jump on with a different question but I need to think about a new lead acid one for the Discovery. Are Exide any better or worse than others eg Bosch or something? (Apart from checking CCA and such like)

The non start stop version of the car has a 40Ah, so they overspec by half to allow it. Its a 2016 car and considering the battery being massively over spec, 9 years is terrible for one in frequent use.

Unlikely, he would stop it anyway it level crossings or if the lights have just changed. Most of the automatic start-stops are the 2 second stops and restart when it saves nothing.

From what I can see the charge voltage is still compatable with MF types, so going to get a 027.

The charging should be different on stop start equipped models to properly charge the AGM battery.
I wouldn't class 9 years as terrible, especially given the cycling it will get from stop start. You should find a normal flooded battery will last considerably less.

Difference in price between a standard and an EFB stop start battery for a type 27 is about 30 quid. If you go full AGM its £60. That's on a decent brand.
I'd say its a no brainer to get the right battery IMO.

9 yrs strikes me as pretty good! I've had the odd battery last longer, but usually less.

Quite a lot suggest that stop/start systems are an expensive way to save money - batteries eventually cost more than the fuel savings, in a lot of cases, and the starter motors fail earlier.

IMO, it’s a case of the car manufacturers gaining a small fuel consumption advantage at the expense of the user. Much like supplying a tyre repair kit instead of a light-weight spare wheel.

Stop/start can be turned off on some (or all?) vehicles.

Wich model discovery ? I have bought mine for D2 from Tayna batteries. You will get it next day too. Last battery I ordered at 5;40 pm & had it next day.

Think the main point of stop/start is to prevent emissions when cars are sat stationary.

From personal experience I think stop/start works really well in automatics....not so much on a manual.

As i recall, the main reason is because it enables the manufacturers to cheat enhance the emissions rating tests, which include periods of time where the car is stationary and idling.

I saw something earlier this week to say you can permanently disable stop/start by removing a fuse-link from the battery terminal (can't remember what car it was but something you can look into?)

Charging on modern cars is complicated, I don't know if a standard battery with the existing stop/start charging system will be a problem. Ask on the owners forums?

Is stop/start part of the MOT these days? ( my cars are older so I've not needed to look into this)

Hope you get it sorted, my cars are 30+ year old and I do my own maintenance, newer cars are getting too clever for their own good !

I've just done this on my '12 Focus.

The 'correct' stop/start battery was £240 and the ordinary £80, both from ECP.

So I bought the same silver Bosch that I put in it six years ago when the original Ford battery died. This is a 13 year old car with 70,000 miles; there's no way stop/start would have saved £320 worth of fuel. And I bet the starter motor costs more than £320 if it fails.

Its been complicated by the fact that GSF, who I was going to buy from, charge near double for the same item in their shop, as they do from ebay with free delivery.
