Can someone help

Hi all, ive just started MIG welding. I can do arc welding and found it much easier to learn than MIG. I bought a used Clarke 150EN of ebay and i cant seem to penetrate 2.5 mm mild steel. I keep getting high welds instead of it penetrating the steel?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It should do it without too much trouble, on power setting 2 max/3 min.
Could be a bad earth connection/loose lead causing lack of power. Are you on gas-less or gas?

Hi,

150 EN ? I can't see one in the MM catalogue, do you mean 150TE?

If it is an EN, are you using gas or gassless please?

And what's the wire thickness please?

Do you have any photos of your welding so far?

The 150TE / EN should definately handle 2.5mm plate on full power (3 Max) using .8 normal wire and would probably work at 3 Min and 2 Max too.

Im using it gasless and using 0.6mm copper coated wire for mild steel. I'll get some pics up when i get the chance. They just have very little penetration if any and are really tall and thin.

Hi Morgan, If you're using 0.6mm wire then you are using wire that has to be welded with sheilding gas,you need to either buy gas if you have a regulator etc or buy gasless wire (0.9mm i think) as the process will not work properly using gas wire without gas as the gas aides penetration as well as sheilding the weldpool basically.

Hi Bigjoe, how embarassing! The seller told me it was gasless wire lol! Well thanks for your help. Luckily i purchased some 0.8 flux cores gasless wire prior to the purcahse of the welder so i will give it a try when my o.8 tips arrive.

Its ok morgan,if you used to arc welding then its easy to forget about sheilding gas, if you get a chance to get some gas etc you will be pleasantly surprised how much cleaner the weld is compared to gasless or mma welding.

My gas/gasless machine came with flux cored 0.8 wire. My welds with it were AWFUL then i got argoshield light from BOC and plain wire and its like someone else did it...someone who can weld

The other day i started welding but had forgot to open the gas valve - knew INSTANTLY - with no gas or flux its just pure spatter, not even good enoughto call it a crap weld - just crap
