Can passengers legally travel in the back of a camper van?

I have a passive interest in people carriers or a Tourneo transit m bus. I have come by an opportunity for a VW "Traveller". Does anyone know the CORRECT answer to my question, or where i could verify the legality.

I thought it depended on age and type, ie a LR doesn't need seat belts if you are sitting on the wheelboxes, but if it had seats parallel to the driver you would (dependant on age of vehicle)

Pre '65 (IIRC) seat belts were not required to be fitted, a few laters everything had to have front belts fitted from new. Don't know when rear belts became manditory fittment from new but for a long time now if belts are fitted, gotta be worn

I think things got complicated when they revised the law regarding age and height of kids/boster seats etc. Directgov seatbelts

Before they revised the law it was simple in that if belts were fitted (vehicle age or retro fit) you had to wear 'em. AFAIK the revisions would now make it illegal for a kid to travel in a vehicle without belts

as said above if the vehicle was made with them, then all passenger seats must also have them.
and i think that if you have a vehicle without them due to age (pre 1965) but fit new seats i think you must also fit belts to them.
with minibuses the mot must have a seatbelt installation check date on them (class 5 mot) which suggests that its date related.
also the seat and belt anchorage must meet british standards (dont know what number)

Interestingly, my 1986 Landrover 90 CSW was manufactured with 4 side-facing rear seats, but only the forward two have seatbelts. Also, the centre front seat only has a lap belt.

Most people (inc the selling garage) think they still get 3 years before the first MOT when you only get 1 year. I think it changes at 12 seats.
