Can I paint over plastic coating?

I won a set of old driveway gates on Ebay that are heavily plastic coated,and I was wondering whether it's possible to paint over the existing coating with enamel paint or whether I'd be needing to get the plastic off first?

If the plastic coating is peeling, it will continue to peel under the paint and just keep flaking off....been there and got the T shirt.

if it's not peeling and you want to brighten them up then perhaps Plasticote may adhere better, not sure how successful enamel would be.

Agree with what steve said, if its peeling get them sand blasted, if its not peeling make sure you scuff the surface well and use a plastic primer first

Thanks for the replies.

The coating's not peeling,I just wanted them to be a better match to the railings on each side,but if I'm gonna need to spend a pile of £££ on special primers/paints I'll just leave them as they are.

If your looking to do it on the cheap, get some acid etch primer (you should be able to buy that at your local car parts place) and then coat it with your paint.
You need a decent primer or the paint just wont stick
