Hi all,
A few years ago I managed to loose a small stainless steel trim piece from the top rear edge of the drivers door on my 1968 Volvo 1800S. I've since lost out on two US ebay auctions for crazy prices and have never seen the item pop up UK ebay. The piece is pretty small (3" x 1.5") and I assume was made as a pressing in stainless steel.
Given that I am reminded each time I get in the car that I am a complete idiot for loosing it and will probably never find a replacement, I was wondering whether this is something I might be able to make myself from stainless. The double folds and the right angle cormer look like a problem to me. I have the mirror image piece from the passenger side as a guide and the drivers door onto which I could offer up the piece as I formed to to check the fit.
Is trying to make this piece a realistic option?
I've done a small amount of metal shaping in the past and can do basic mig welding on steel, but never stainless.
Would making a former and beating into shape be a realistic option? If so what would be the most easily bent stainless?
Would I even be able to planish out any hammer marks?
Phil
