Can anyone tell me what this is?

Hi all ,
i need some help identifing a part in the cab heater of my Fiat tractor
It seem to be a small coil with a wire through the middle,foud in the space between
the hot water radiator and the fan,shown by the red box.
Apologys for the quality of the photos.

I can't make it out from the picture but most likely a resistor for the fan speed controller.

Fan speed resistor? How many settings does your blower have?

It could be the resistance for low-speed running. Try disconnecting it and see if slow speed still works.

the fan runs off a three position switch off,1 and 2
the blower hasn't worked for a while and this component seem the
only one thats faulty.
If i by-pass it the fan works.What problems would the be if I removed it
altogether?

You will be limited to 0 and 2.
The centre piece is likely a thermal fuse with the resistor around the outside of it. Those thermal fuses are little more than *tribology, maplin sell them should you wish to repair it properly, or alternatively you could bridge it with a piece of wire - of equal thickness to the others.

Edit: Sorry tribology is the wrong word, I'm driving at built in obselescence*

One speed won't be a problem , I just want a bit of heat in the winter.

Yeah it's just a resistor to slow the fan for the different speeds, you'd probably pick one up from a new Holland dealer, or Google the fan manufacturer.

I'd swap it for a non original piece of equipment - i.e a piece of good quality copper wire. That way you'll avoid having to Fix It Again Tomorrow.

A thermal fuse is 89p in Maplins, I know that because I bought one yesterday to repair our shower room extractor fan. Saved myself the £65 Toolstation wanted for a replacement fan!

the old mk 5 transits used to stop working due to the connections rusting up and you could simply crimp the cables back on, I would replace the resistor or get that one working, running the fan at full speed will end up annoying and if like the transits used to be, burn the switch out
