Camping France Rouen

off to the south of France 12/9/10 wanting to overnight Rouen, any ideas?
sod all to do with welding, but I,m in the Discovery & thats had a bit of welding

Try Ibis, for about €45 a night, there a lot better than Formula 1 and they do a good breafast!

What about Campanile? really like their rooms, you even have your own kettle to make coffee in the morning!
F1 is crappy IMHO....we slept there once and the beds are too short!

There are ( or where until recently ) two levels of Formula 1 which you can tell the difference looking at the logo , the good ones that have been done up within the past few years and the originals that havent had a lick of paint since they were built , they are the pits and not even a bargain at that which they were a long time ago . Mind you they are a lot better than some of the flea pits that pass for b&b in Dover , would sleep in the car rather than stay their again .

Are you looking for a B&B or camp site?

We normally take Alan Rogers camping book with us, he's never let us down, he's reviews on the camp sites are pretty spot on.

If you're camping, most of the sites I've stayed at in France have been OK. How long'll be staying in them & what you expect is a factor!

I've generally only stayed one night and don't expect much more than clean bogs so not had a problem

Everywhere in France has a local campsite or two, and any modern sat. nav. should know where they are. Usually just a matter of driving/riding till you've had enough then pulling over

When I did alot of Motorcycling in France with my mates we always stayed in Logis and thats where I've eaten some of the best meals I've ever had in a restaurant ! We always had courteous service and very reasonable prices. It's been a while since I last went to France though so I don't know how much it's changed, but here is a useful website anyway :-

One good thing about France is that hotels are signposted. That means if you turn up in a town that you don't know you can find something close and fairly cheap. As for camping (I cant do that anymore due to getting up in the mornings and being stuck in one position for an hour) Ive stayed in many campsites in France and all but one or two have been very well appointed.

We tootle around quite a bit in our motorhome, and in that we sometimes camp in the aires and stuff, and there are quite a few free places too that do camping and are really nice. A few weekends back we were in a municipal aire near the dordogne that had water/waste/toilets and electric hook up for 12 people, one night only for free and this week my mrs has taken the kids off to la rochelle way in the motorhome while I get on with some house building. The whole country is very geared to camping and motorhoming round apart from Paris (which is the armpit of france and just a tourist trap anyway, so best avoided).

There is a yearly french camping book you can get with each region specified and the address of the municipal campsites etc in that region. I can check out the ones listed in rouen, but itll be the weekend when it comes back, as its in the door pocket of the motorhome.

One thing though, dont ever stay in a motorway toll booth parking area. We did it once in desperation going to paris when all the services etc were full of lorries parked over the car spaces, and if you want to wake up gassed by exhaust fumes, and kept awake all night by screeching tyres its the place to be.
Hence my advice if your going to kip in the car would be to get off the autoroute if you want a decent nights kip. Even the autoroute camping aire's you can hear stuff zooming past all night. And if you see the french version of the gypo's move on as usual as theyre just the same robbing lying scum they are everywhere. The aire du voyagers is french for gypo campsite too so be warned, they might get a bit freaked out if you pull up and camp in "their" site.

Is there a reason for rouen? you should be able to make well south of paris heading down before it gets too much in that disco unless youve got a huge journey the english side. Ive done it in my td90 via the route nationales (the same route I think your planning) and it took me 9 hrs to here (2hrs south of paris) from the port and that was petrol station hopping because my fuel gauge was broke and the landie was new to me then. I did it in 5hrs dead once in my v8 rangerover, but that may have involved some naughtyness through the paris periphique so not to be recommended
