Yeh the good ol days where ya had to help push them up hills and put 5 lts in every 30 mls ! ish .
Now we've got silly cars giving 160 bhp from 1.9 diesels ! and 60 mpg.
but seriously one of the reasons is, they use the same size chain as the moggy BUT the cam lift is much greater/ faster with bigger heavier 4 valves, higher compressions and running the higher pressure fuel pumps especially on diesels with a massive snatch as they produce the injection pulses ( much less of a prob on a common rail). All through a little ol chain thats made outa chinese high(HA) quality? Steel ( read chocolate ) .
BTW not many cars now TC 's are good for 150k I wouldnt give them that long. Best chains I've seen are in the Honda s2000 engine they don't seem to wear even though they are revin to 9500 but then again higher revs less drive torque, higher FQ pulses not the low speed big snatch .
Maybe thats the answer go everywhere at 9500 and save ya chain. YEHA
BTW again, when I used to build Moggy comp engines ya used to fit a duplex (twin)) chain to take the extra load. Even in them old days
So chains are less reliable than belts? The change time on my Espace is 120K km, not that I let it go that long.
Used to tune Minis (old sort) the single chains used to snap if one used over 7,000rpm often. Cure was the duplex kit off the Cooper 'S'. Difference was: the valves did not hit the pistons, so the couple of times I had it happen, it was only a new chain.
