Calculating load capacity of a beam/RSJ

Hi,

want to rig up a beam to run a beam roller and block and tackle on so i can load stuff onto the mill more easily.

The workshop has 6" RSJ's running front to back so the plan is to bolt in a cross beam that I can then run the roller on.

Ideally I only want to use a beam with a 100mm height as there is limited clearance with the timbers that support the mezzanine above.

Have seen universal columns that can be used as beams in 100mm x 100mm which would be ideal, but just want to check what load a 100mm x 100m UC would take with a 2m span.

Anyone handy with the calculator?

I've not seen a UC at 100 x 100, 152 x 152 is the smallest listed,
102 x 102 x 23 RSJ should be available, and a quick run though superbeam shows that simply supported it will support a point load of 33Kn in the middle of a 2m span, with a 5.5mm deflection which is within acceptable limits.

I was looking at Parker Steel as they have a local depot and they listed a 100 x100 x 20 as here http://www.parkersteel.co.uk/Product/0853593/European+Section/100+X+100+X+20KG+S355JR+HEB100

Steels aren't my area so could be misreading

I will go see if they do a 102 RSJ.

Am I right in thinking a load of 33Kn is basically ~ 3000kg direct weight?

HE 100B section slightly less loading capacity, still probably more than enough for you though, 30kn gives a 5.4 deflection.
for round figures 30kn around 3 tonnes force, remember these figures are for static loadings.

Most it will ever have is probs 1000kg and that is incredibly unlikely, more likely 250kg if I want to run and engine from one side of the workshop to another or lift the arm onto the mill.

So sounds like its ideal, have to see if I can find some "cut offs" in my local fabrication yard first

Could do with knowing the same for a 178x102x19 rsj I've been wanting to make a trolley for!?

If running a trolley on the bottom flanges it is the flange bending that tends to be the critical failure bound unless you have a ridiculous beam span.
A UC section will likely be worse as even though the flanges are thicker the greater width from the web leads to more bending.

May have changed with recent eurocodes but I seem to remember dynamic load factors for cranage varying between 1.6 and 2.2 depending on whether the hoist was manual or electric.
