I 've looking around for a C02 fire extinguisher for the workshop, but around here in Crete they seem hard to get and expensive nearly 100 euros for a small one .... so here is my question can use use beer type C02 as a extinguisher ? I get me wielding gas from a local beer warehouse 40 euros deposit and 6.50 for a refill and I bet with a little imagination I could make up a fitting with a hose and a nozzle and end up with a big extinguisher that lived in the workshop ,for next to nothing ....but does a beer gas bottle have enough ooommfff ?any one tried it ? or shall I just bite the bullet and shell out for the proper thing ?....jeff....

A fire extinguisher will have a dip tube to deliver liquid. The pub bottle will pull from the top to deliver gas. I guess you could use the bottle upside down.

As to enough oomph, the pressure will be the same either way.

but if used would it need a regulator fitted . have u ever opened one without reg . it would need a feed pipe and a horn tube ??

I have had to use CO2 extinguishers in anger and no regulator is needed, so I imagine opening the valve with the cylinder upside down would do the trick. Easy enough to try. It comes out as a very cold cloud of white vapour from the standard kit.

I used to work in a chemical plant making carbon, nylon and kevlar composites. One of the main chemicals used was acetone. They had a couple of large co2 cylinders (5 foot'ish) They had no regulators but had a pipe with a fire extinguisher fitting on the end and a big nosle.
