Buying Car Tax Online

We normally pay for the car tax online, other half went to do it this evening through the gov.co.UK site and it was asking you to register a name and password, which it has never done before and she had a warning of a security certificate was not signed by a known authority. She backed out of it as she was not happy.
Any one noticed any difference?

Did one last night, same as usual, no log in required, just the number from the reminder.

Noticed it mention something about registering when I did ours at the start of the month. Didn't actually have to register or anything to sort the tax though. They may just be planning a new setup and have cocked the existing one up slightly.

Are you registered for self assessment or any other government online services? If not you may need to. Those of us who haven't had any problems buying a tax disc may be self-employed &c and already registered.

I'm not registered for any online stuff and have never needed more than the 16 digit reminder number and debit card

I had another go and noticed they have a beta version as an option so I am guessing they were trialling it. Went through this time without anything strange happening but looks like you will have to register when the beta version comes into effect!

That might be due to the going to pay by direct debit thing

Did mine last night without any problem, you dont need to be registered to use the dvla site, but any cards you use will now need to be set up with the verified by visa scheme, if your card comes up as not registered then you get directed to the site to set it up, its easy to do, just make sure you remember the password as it will be the same on other sites that use it

Will it not be preparation for when they do away with the tax disc, I should imagine it will become more of a personal payment registering process rather than just entering a reference number.

Yep but one thing there keeping quiet is tax will not be transferable so no more buying a car with 6month tax. ALS there doesn't seam to be any plans for refunds or reduced cost for part months

Read that the other day, and thought at the time the amount of extra money they will take from us

as they are doing away with the tax disc, it should be that the person is registered as being allowed to drive a vehicle on the road, so that we only pay tax once for any vehicle that we drive, as long as only 1 vehicle registered to the driver is on the road at any one time

if they put the tax on the fuel u use that would be fair but that will never happen niether as road fund licence is just another revenue for the goverment coffers

yeah just the title road fund is a joke, if it was all used on our roads we would have the best in the world

You do have to register with a government portal to deal with driving licences, Mrs Robo lost hers a couple of years ago and had to register to get a replacement.
