I‘m currently paying £450 quarterly on a 24ftx20ft workshop - does this seem right? I looked online how it is calculated and got completely confused!

Check out the rate relief scheme, it may well apply https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-business-rate-relief/small-business-rate-relief

Bloody hell £14,600 rateable value for a wee workshop? You must live in an expensive place. Thanks, just looked at the gov site regarding rates relief - it looks to me that the rateable value of it according to my bill is £14600 so I can potentially get 13.3% off.
Although I live in a very expensive place I may have made a mistake! My bill reads “RV for period” (£3650) which I took as rateable value for the period of the quarterly bill however just looked up the identical unit next door and that is £3700 per annum so hopefully I can pay zero ratesBloody hell £14,600 rateable value for a wee workshop? Small business rates relief - I think has been generous by the Government/local authorities.
I got a small workshop - I cannot remember the last time I paid rates.
Not really, they do absolutely nothing for a business. Its the business that benefits the area by employing people, cant think of a service offered by the council that benefits anything I do or warrants the 25k a year they would like to steal from this place, I even have to pay to get bins emptied. If it wasn't for the o so generous rate relief scheme I would lay everyone off and pack up, and I am not alone on this.

I think your question is: "what do you get for the money from paying business rates".

Pre covid - business rates in a small town on a retail shop unit in the town centre were higher per year than the rent - that can't be right!
Retail units in a "high street" are not prime realestate now!
