Burr(s) My new favorite tool!

Hi folks, just had to share, got a set of tungsten carbide burrs (Norton Make), at a great price from a place the other end of the country to me ie;glasgow. Odered online middle of sat night and delivered tuesday morning!
I have been struggling to file/grind a rectangular hole in some 6mm plate, cutting the hole out rough with a plasma is easy enough but often theres not enough room to get the grinder in to clean up the edges.
Hand filing is usually the way to go, but slow / hard work, and with my knackerd shoulder, not my favorite thing to do....So

I've invested around half what I expected to spend on a set of Burrs.
Whow! Don't the bits go Everywhere! Not to be used without PPE!
Boots!!!!! got a few splinters in me socks! pickin them out yer feet is not fun. Once I found the sweet spot where air die and burr were happy, stock removal is very quick and had the job ready for welding in half the time.
Result!

I agree burrs are great, amazing how much material you can remove very quickly with them in the right tool.

I just don't like the needle sharp filings that they make, i've been picking them out of my skin a week afterwards as they become stuck in clothes/shoes/socks etc. can be rather painful.

PPE is definitely in order, I would suggest a good pair of sealed goggles (highly recommend the UVEX ones) rather than glasses, the filings travel quicker and further than you would imagine.

I always used to be searching for them at silly prices. Till I watched a few on ebay. Put low bids on them all and won a few "job lots" at the same time. DOH! Now i've got about 60. I use them every day so can never have too many, and only paid around £200 for them all so all in all was very good.

I've just purchased a Atlas Copco die grinder. Its regulated and hardly uses any air compared to the old 1. You can press on as hard as you like and it doesn't slow down (uses more air this way though) as my apprentice usually likes to!

I've still not found a way to stop the bits going down your neck etc though.

Putting off working today as it's too hot in the sun where I'm working! Or at least untill the sun goes round a bit and I have some shade!!!!

Im a big fan too, I bought the set of ten on ebay for my Rotary Tool, Hong Kong location. Ive abused them only with ally for porting cylinders and there all still sharp. Think I paid about £9 + £3 p&p.

It's not a cure, but it is a help. Get a strong magnet and a plastic bag. Put the magnet in the bag, attach it close to where you're working.

At least some of the splinters end up stuck to the bag because of the magnet, and turning the bag inside out puts the splinters in the bag and leaves you with a clean magnet.

Not a fix, but it can help.

i guess it depends which type, ive seen some magnetic 'stainless steel'

not very effective on aluminium cylinder heads tho, ha
