burning shrouds

Can anyone point me towards some advice about my shrouds getting very burnt at the front edge..only getting about 4-5 hours out of each one but the tips are fine...is it a gas thing or too close?? Ime using Couger.

The Guy I bought my welder from gave me a load of spare new shrouds all of which he had purposefully machined to reduce their length which makes the tip level with the end of the shroud, He was a professional welder, now I can't say if this is the correct thing to do as I am not experienced enough to do so, but he obviously saw some reason to do it. I have not yet had to renew a shroud so this may be worth a try,

only 6-10mm stuff normaly but i did have a frenzy welding some scafold tube making a solid tow bar recently

What machine? Thats gonna be quite a heavy weld so you might just be getting it too hot, hobby welders can do the work but the shrouds are smaller than industrials so get hotter quicker. Try cutting it down to about the point where the shroud is about 1mm nearer the work than the tip maybe

Was it galvanised tube by chance?
That doesn't do them any good.

I think that's your answer, get an MB25 if you're normally welding thicker stuff.

MB25...whats that rated at mate?? had a brain freeze too as when i lay down some heavy weld the stem at the back of the shroud gets very hot but its the torch that come with the welder from new so i thought it could handle the amps as ime only on 3 and the dial goes to 5

Difficult to see properly from the photo and I could be wrong, but that looks like an MB25, you can tell by the white insulator / heatshield between the shroud and the swan neck, on the MB15 its a different setup. MB 25 is rated 250amps on pure co2, and 200 on mixed gases

thats really strange and ive never noticed...the pic was an ebay pic from the seller but looking at what you've said on mine its a black ring on the neck and not a white,so going on that ive been sold another torch from what was advertised

MB15 torches often have a rubber sleeve over the swan neck, afaik an MB25 shouldn't have one and it will also be considerably bigger though that won't help if you've nothing to compare yours to.

Easy way to tell is, if the contact tip screws directly into the swan neck its likey to be an MB15 size, (150amps).
If the tip screws into a tip adaptor which is in turn screwed into the swan neck it will be an MB25 or bigger.

ok cheers looks like my torch is too small for the higher amp welding i sometimes do...ile check out the MB25
