burn cooker wiring

Go a call from my mate last night his oven had tripped the breaker and he smelt burning.

Turns out the breaker has been tripping for a few weeks.

Any way I pulled the oven out and found the cable melted also the hob cable had been melted where they were touching.

Then ~I took the back off the oven and it was like dust! all of the wiring had been been burnt no insulation left on any of it.

So I had a good poke around turns out the thicker cable 10mm2 has been connected to the hob and the thinned cable connected to the oven! Anyway it has been like this since the place was built 10 years ago. I guess some resistance has built up causing the heat.

thats what I am saying who ever did the install has mixed up the cables I think and now that has shown its head

What size breakers are the cables on? and how far roughly from DB to oven/hob?

32 amp breaker and I would say 3M from DB

I have just fitted a new oven and swapped the 2.5mm to the hob and the 10mm to the cooker.

jeesus 10mm to cooker. it only needs 2.5mm even if its a double oven and shouldn't be on 30amp .are you saying its a separate hob and a separate oven . or is it a complete cooker look at the spec plate on both it will tell you the current rating of each

it could be 6mm but yes it is a tad on the large side usually it is 10mm to the switch then onto the wall plate then wire in 2.5 I did think about fitting a wall plate for the cooker behind. It is up and running now looks like 10mm to 2 switches on the wall that isolates the hob and one for the oven

it is just a single oven nothing special

single oven is only 13 amp and should be on a plug or through a switch fused spur not a 30 amp breaker. the hobs on 30 amp and should be wired in 4.0mm cable

the oven could be on a fused spur I could not see the switches as they were behind the microwave!

The hob is the bit that needs the big wires, most ovens are only 1500watts per element, so even using one top and bottom, would be 3,000 watts.
Hob could be much more.

i tell u what the screw that held the + on the hob was fooked I had to remove the terminal and use a choc block for the 2 wires and they are thin I can tell you
