Bump feed strimmer heads?

but nettles…..arghhhhhh I strim lots and lots of them. For anything else its the flail mower.

With nettles just keep hitting them and it'll knock them back a fair bit.

The bank infront of our house used to be completely covered in nettles. It goes from 5ft to 20ft high and minimum of 1 in 3 and last summer and so far this year it's been dry enough to hit it regularly with the flail behind the compact tractor (New Holland 1220). It's been dry enough I've been able to do it everytime I've mowed the lawns so far (can only mow most of it down hill so it's a tedious method of doing long laps) and touch wood no nettles have come through yet.

Yes the flail works a treat, I have two, one tractor, the other quad towable. But my 3 nettle invested areas are not really accessible for either. One is wet soggy and covered in big stones, removed from elsewhere, the other is my predecessors rubble pile that Im gradually smoothing out, the third is between my-shed and a dry stone wall.

Im familiar with long lap mowing, do a fair bit of that through rushes.

Hated the bump feed heads on previous strimmers. The Ego Strimmer I have now comes with an auto feed, which I thought would use lots of line but hasn’t. It makes the job faster too as you’ve always got the right amount line. Better still it has a power feed so just cut the line, thread it through the head to midway then press the button and pulls the line in.

I feed mine by revving it up, let go of the trigger and bump it on the ground as it spins down

The one that came with my EGO battery brushcutter is great.
Fast loading just feed the length half way through & twist till its all in bar the last bit.
Take 3mm I think from memory.
Tool is the muts nutts too.

This what I have and it uses something called Line IQ to feed the line out automatically

Years ago Black And Decker made a Command Feed strimmer.

Had a lever on the handle that dispensed a set amount of line per click. Worked really well.

I just grabbed a couple of pics in case anyone knows exactly which model this is. It has the extended strimmer head with cowhorns if that helps. It is desperately in need of a service and a few bits and bobs (screws mostly, also the choke knob).

Mine came with 2mm clover line but upgraded to 2.4mm, and both last significantly longer than I expected for what Im cutting. I have only used a small amount of each but its good stuff and worth every penny.

For council and rail work we used to have Stihl 4mm cord and it was extremely frustrating that some rolls would constantly break off and others just didnt last that long on a good day.

I suppose its possible we had a bad batch, or stored incorrectly but it appeared to be a common thing, some new rolls were rubbish.
