Bulk SMS software or router

I remember years ago the Nokkia suite allowed you to send sms just like email. You connected your phone to the PC and away to go.

There are loads of services online but they all charge money - cheapest I could find was 2.5p per sms.

As most phones these days have unlimited free SMS is there any software or hardware we could use to send bulk sms easily? Not for advertising but purely customer service - tracking updates etc.

My phone can link to my laptop and I can send messages straight from it without any more software

That is for mobile phones - I need something that works through a desktop.

I've just got a new Sony XA2 Ultra phone, there's a popup message in the SMS app that suggests I can send/recieve/manage texts via my PC, not explored it yet

If you are an Apple user you can link an Ipad to your phone number and send texts via the Ipad. Maybe it would work though a Mac.

I know with work we used to have an email format that would send a sms to our phone but it doesn't seem to work now

How are you at programming? Amazon Web Service SNS (Simple Notification Service) offers UK texts at around 2p per text.
I suspect that the service you're looking at that is 2.5p is layering a service over AWS.

The other option (which is probably more convoluted) would be to hook up a physical phone to your PC and drive that to send texts (as described above).
