Bulging Garage Walls

So as not to detract from the bathroom thread elsewhere.

@brightspark picked up when I removed ceiling joists and was questioning how I stopped the roof spreading. I basically put the ceiling joists back (there's also other structures that stop my roof spreading).

This though, from another public forum. Someone's garage. No ties so the roof is slumping and pushing out at least the top course.

...I wonder if I could have that fold up ladder off of them before the whole lot comes down, could do with one of them...

Oddly enough I do have a bulging garage in the can't swing a cat sense, along with empty pockets...

Apparently the garage was built 7-8 years ago. The guy has just bought the house and is hoping to get the original roofer/builder back.

You are going to need to tie the rafters with steel rods to make a triangle ..... you can often see triangulation steel rod ties in village and church halls built in the late 19th and the early part of the 20th centuries.

Here are three of photos I took last summer of a modern take on fixing the triangulation rafter ties in a 15th century church in Reepham, Norfolk.

nice idea but the church still has a good thick center apex beam to fasten too but thats a hip roof picture and so is this


then the roof wants bolt baring owner was advised to buy anf fit this item unknown if they did

but we all know some outcomes oh it dosnt need it by the owner

maybe bung a couple of acrow props in just to stop things getting worse , and if no one else will sort it out they would let you get some ties in if you have enough headroom , ideally you want them as low as you can without banging your head.
jack up on an acro and pull the ends in with a ratchet strap then fasten a tie across ,,, just thinking out loud.

I always make up a solid conc or steel ring beam.....bit late now tho....
to make the best job would be to take the roof off, esp as there's not enough headroom as it is...
or a couple/few of brick pillars but u'll need to lift the roof a bit....

Reminds me of my garage extension at our last place. The builder/roofer forgot to fit the joists, they had done the felt and battens - I was doing the tiles as a lot were being moved/changed - then I pointed out the missing joists, red faced roofer was back next morning to fit them.

Don't know how that happened as he supplied them and they were sitting in the main garage.
