built my gate. need to know

Between my house and next door is 1.3m and I've built my gate with 20mm box section 7ft high at its peak and is welded onto a 50mm box section post. The gate is 1m and have another piece made up with same box section with 250mm posts.

What I want to know, if I dig down 2 ft and fill in with post concrete will this be enough to hold the gate. You see, the 2 houses are old stone so don't want to go drilling holes into the walls in case I disturb them and bring damp through.

Another thing that concerns me, how will I be able to keep all this plumb if I cant attach it to the wall. Any suggestions?

I don't see why it wouldn't hold it ok with 2ft into concrete, as for keeping it plumb while it sets, use wood wedged between the houses while its sets then remove

I've 2ft at the bottom at the moment but might have to cut it if I can't get down 2 ft. I have 15mm to play with on both sides )7.5mm each side) , will these small wooden wedges hold it ?

all you need is a small wedge between wall and post then some longer timber from the other side knocked in tight to hold it

In theory that looks good thou mines has 3 posts. One welded onto the gate and a frame made up of 2 posts and some box section where the gate latches into.

Will try your method and see if it works out with the 3 posts.

I'm sure you will find a way to wegde it, get the fast setting concrete

My question would be hanging the gate from one post, how much will the post bend with the weight, so say you can some how clamp the post vertical just relying on the bottom section that would be in the concrete and then hang the gate, will the top of the post deflect and by how much when the gate is hanging off it?

Say it deflects 15mm, then when you set in to the concrete tilt it back at the top by this amount or a little less so the weight pulls it back.

just a thought.

ah so you have a side panel, use blocks of wood between posts and wall and wedges to knock in to tighten up while its sets

OK so it is on a single free standing post, so if you can jig it so the weight is on a single post you will be able to see how much the bend is, it may not be a lot, but if you find it is quite a lot, you must remember as the gate is opened the post will flex in that direction.

I would also say that the weight has to be on the bottom pin/hinge and the top hinge really just keeping the gate in place, that way there will be a lot less bending moment at the top of the post.

Could you tolerate an arch over the top of the gate, from one house to the other? An arch in compression would stop the hanging post from tilting under the weight of the gate, by transferring the load to the other house wall.

It might solve your problem provided that (a) nothing very tall has to pass through the gate and (b) you don’t object to the appearance.

What's on the ground now? My first thoughts are a bolt down base plate on each post if it's concrete or even bedded flag
Then attach to the house without going too deep with resin set stud and lugs
Digging down right next to whatever foundation you have got is more likely to lead to damp imo

If you are going to dig down. I normally dig an oversize hole. Lock the post plumb with a few rocks or such and pour in the dry postcreate and then pour in the water

Very hard to advise without survey though but I totally don't get the issue with the house walls, you only need go into them about two inch to fix resin studfing for such am application
