building up wood

right, so I want to build up the stock on one of my shotguns as it has been dropped and kicked about and sanded back and stained then sanded back again and now in places it doesn't fit the metal properly.

the checkering needs deepening, but all of the original lines are there so that not an issue, I just need to build up some small areas around the action.

what can I use to do this, and still be able to sand it back and stain it with walnut wood stain so it is an invisible patch so to speak?

some people have told me to use epoxy resin, but will this accept the sealer and stain?

The best way is to let in some new wood then sand it back, a Dutchman repair might work

do you think that would work on a corner? Its not a very big repair, about 5mm deep and about 8mm square where the stock meets the action just behind the hammers.

If it's that small, what about inserting a plug then trimming back?. Link to plugcutters

You need some close matching wood whichever type of repair you do.

i hadn't thought of plug cutters. I have some of them somewhere.

in not sure what the wood is but it has been stained a few times with different colours. Its currently a light beech but if I decided to do it i will be going walnut as i prefer walnut stocks on a black action.

It's more the type and grain you need to match rather than the colour.

i suppose i could take a plug from underneath the butt pad if i needed to. Realistically in not going to be selling this gun on. It has very little value and people want over/unders for their softer kick, or semi auto/pump for wild fowling so this is just because i don't lime having something that isn't as it should be, although saying that a few people have shot it and not noticed so maybe i am just being ocd again
