If that proves difficult what about replacing the spindle drive with a servo motor as well? They're not hugely expensive from Ali express.

The problem is all those pesky gears between the spindle motor and the spindle.

Unless it can be sized to be direct drive or fixed gearing.

I did think along these lines, but it was only a fleeting thought, the motor is three horse and there are occasions when I could do with more AND the stop/start mechanism as currently installed just works perfectly. An encoder installed as @Dell shows is just the ticket. My only issue (and I am guilty of procrastinating here) is the choice of pulley. Ideally a couple of alloy pulleys because the mass would be less and I need a size that will machine to the OD of the spindle.
