Build Plate Types

My printer came with a textured PEI plate, works just fine with PLA and PETG, but i see other plates available so wondered what they were for?

ill be ordering a spare textured PEI as ive found PETG wants time to cool before releasing easily, so having a second plate means i can just swap to the fresh one and start printing again if needed, but wondering if i need any others? i do plan on playing with TPU at some point and possibly ABS and some CF filaments although i need an enclosure first which i will probably make myself as most of it is printed anyway.

I have a magnetic plate thats flexible so easy to remove prints never had an issue with it or needed to coat it with anything before printing

thats the sort of plate i have now, textured, flexible and sticks to the bed magnetically.

wondering more what the other tyes are for really, ive seen smooth PC, Textured PEI and PEO, Cold plates etc

I detest the textured build plate that came with my Bambu H2D and I've just bought a couple of replacements from Oseq. I've only done a couple of prints so far but they seem miles better. Nicer (flat rather than textured) surface on the bottom and, most importantly, the prints come off easily. On the Bambu textured one, relatively big prints come off easily, but any support bases, purge towers or small parts seem to weld themselves to the surface. I even resorted to a hot air gun and a brass brush the other day to get the last few support base bits off. If I use it again for anything with supports, filament changes or small parts, I'll try a glue layer, but in practice I think I'll just use the Oseq plate and keep the textured one for huge things (as the extra adhesion will help minimise warping).

Of course, if your textured one is fine, then the only benefit of a different plate is going to be the nicer finish on the bottom from a satin plate or perhaps (for some other plates) the ability to print weird materials that you can't on the textured one.

i have noticed the PETG support material doesnt like releasing from mine unless its stone cold, but i get around that by just breaking the supports off close to the base then letting it cool on the welding bench while im finishing the piece off.

i may look at a smooth plate and see how that does in comparison.

PLA releases just fine from the textured one.
