That tale of the machine failing to work, people can't work it out, the retired guy is persuaded in, he looks at, puts a cross on it, say hit here, charges a millon and one quid . . . a quid to put the cross, a million to know where to put the cross?
I felt a little like that this week - dragged on-site to a machine that's not working. Watch it working, spot an issue - suggest a quick bodge to allow testing to continue . . . spot the next issue, persuade things to be changed a little bit.
And it works - quarter million quid machine now works as it should . . . and the orders for another several millions quids worth now seem achievable.
I'm certainly not any better than the very intelligent guys working on it, but they got fixated on one or two things, and weren't seeing what was right in front of them. Or maybe they had, but were fixated on "proper" new parts needing designing and making, rather than make do and mend to get things working enough to fix the real issues.
I still only get the same quid I would have got even it I hadn't done it though![]()

Not quite sure how that links into a welder used at home that loudly let all the magic stuff out when plugged in . . .Did you not exercise your experience and seniority in the matter ?
Your quote here makes me think you have solutions to everything?
Have I misinterpreted the situation?
Now I’m properly lostNot quite sure how that links into a welder used at home that loudly let all the magic stuff out when plugged in . . .
But the work situation - no, you're exactly right- precisely what I was dragged in to do and exactly what I'm paid decent money to do, and very satisfying it is when it all comes together
Have an open mind, and even more open eyes. And each job teaches you something else to add to the memory bank.
So point me at someone else's bit of gear and I'm pretty sure I would find the point to mark the "X", but it would take me longer as I'd have to work it out, probably even have to read the manual (whereas I help to write ours) - and one of their guys would be better at doing it, so drag them in instead. Although sometimes of course, a fresh pair of eyes sometimes sees the trees in the wood better. I was thinking the other day I'm probably a better spotter of issues and their fixes, than the creator of entirely new designs - which means I work well with a colleague of mine who is damn good at doing the original thinking design - and I cause him much grief by spotting flaws in ideas - but we end up with good machinery. He's the guy who uses better tolerance . . . whereas I just use a bigger hammer. I was in a plant in the US (actually a competitor to our parent company) last month where the guys on the floor were keen to tell me our machines were pretty good to use (I'd not seen so many of our machines in one place - close to 60 of them in one plant - quite a few tens of million quid) - I was there to look at a direct competitors machine with a view to applying our ideas to improve it. But I also took a good look at our gear, and came home with a list of things to be looked at.
Know your limits though - I was told by our CEO the winning factor in my presentation of a machine idea to some super-duper VP's and P's of this, that and the other in the USA some years ago, was when one of those super duper VP's asked me if I knew what to do if X,Y and Zee happened . . . I said I had absolutely no idea . . . but I knew someone who did, who I could ask. Apparently, that honesty, rather than an attempt to bam-boozle, was muchly appreciated as I didn't continue to present something half-read, half-remembered and out of date as being the one and only gospel truth
I learnt too, a long time ago, that electrickery, other than domestic basics, and cars up to mid-90's ish, is best left to those qualified-er and experienced-er than meSo my solution with the welder is to talk to those who know how to fix it, and open the wallet
I'm still amused at the "senior" in my job title - I still feel 25 in my head, and I reckon it's there simply because I've out-lasted the rest . . .
I realised after posting, the memory is failing though - forgot it's Bank Holiday tomorrow, so Tuesday will the day to call GYS . . . getting too "senior" in my old age
What was the question again?![]()
Saving grace is that they have a uk service center ,, your not sending a brown card box back to China ,, and for that reason alone your in with a sporting chance.I should think their service department should be good, given the money they've invested into the UK in recent years, customer experience is vital
My cut 20 was rubbish. Best thing it ever did was go bang...GYS have never been the most reliable of machines in my experience. French and electronics
Seen quite a few of their chargers blow up, they're very features dense and have a good price point compared to Fronius, but obviously don't have the reliability nailed down yet.
I think that happened for most of us reading this thread when you first posted ?Now I’m properly lost
The first post was fine. Like you, looking forward to seeing what response the OP gets from GYSFirst post sort of laid it all out clearly even for the hard of understanding , or was the first post edited .
Thats the service they advertise ,,, the fact that its gone so smooth so far is impressive ,,, either its very efficient , or they have had lots of practice ,,Well, phone call first thing this morning - five mins later an email arrived with a fault report form, and a collection label.
I shoved it back in the box it came in five years ago, stuck the label on it and a TNT van turned up a little while ago and off it went.
Until the "BANG" it has been enjoyable to use for my DIY welding - few bits of car repair, bits of Lotus Elan, trials car repair and construction of a new trials car chassis - I mentioned on here before, as a DIY welder, it made me look good, and was so enjoyable to use, I'd finish one thing and look for another to carry on welding
Fingers crossed the repair is simple and low cost.
