[I'm getting on a bit]

Okay I'm getting infinity soon and will be connecting myself.

Does it use the same two wires that the telephone uses as there are other only two out of the many in the master socket connected.

The same pair that are in use now remain in use. If you are going to fit the new style master filter, you don't need to mess with any of that, as the filter replaces the front of the master socket. If you have any extensions, they get attached to the filter unit, where you will see an IDC terminal block. Blue pair go to 2 (solid blue-white rings) and 5 (white with blue rings), and the solid orange(white rings) goes to 3.

I would advise getting shot of the Home Hub ASAP. It's a hopeless thing. I replaced the FiL's with some of my old gear, as it could be configured rather than being locked down.

also do you have an nte5 socket i.e split into 2 halves for incoming line and extensions ?

I have a Home Hub 5 and it's no problem at all. I'm running 2pcs hard-wired and a camera & tablet via wi-fi plus a 2TB hard disk on the USB connector.

Yep, new home hub is spot on and if you don't use it they stop you using the network of free hotspots.

But hub 5 is an excellent device, far better than earlier offerings.

How do they define "use it"? As long as it's switched on and connected it's still available to other users.

Exactly that, as long as it's on so others can use it then you can use other people's ..

If you use a 3rd party device which is perfectly acceptable then you lose the option to pinch spare bandwidth elsewhere

It may not be a big deal to you either way, I don't think I've ever used anyo else's hotspot but I do find a queue of parcel vans stop outside my house for a few mins each morning.

Wireshark confirms they are using my access point, I reckon it's a good idea.

TBH the only reason I'm with BT is the ability to use other routers, although I spent some time on Leeds station trying to get access, it just hung up on "Getting IP address" although there were quite a few BT hotspots nearby.
