BST - wtf?

Can anyone out there explain to me why, for six months of the year, we have noon at one o'clock?

The whole world bases its timekeeping on Greenwich meantime, so why do we abandon it for half of every year?

There are still the same number of hours in the day, if people want to start work earlier, why not just get up at 6 instead of 7?

Total waste of time and money (no pun intended).

Thoughts?

(And yes,in case you're wondering, I forgot to put my clock forward last night and it's made a total bo***ocks of my day...)

We are not the only country that changes our clocks, Europe does exactly the same with Central European Summer Time. I think the main reasons for doing so is to reduce accidents and decrease energy use... so not really a waste of money, perhaps it actually saves money :-)

I set them forward last night , still got up at the same time ! Body clock doesnt change automatically !

Changing the clocks twice a year makes more sense to me than say starting work at say 7am for six months of the year and 8am for the other six and is presumably a lot cheaper than changing opening times/bus & train schedules and the like twice a year? Especially as many things with clocks in 'em change themselves thesedays

Personally i'd rather they got left on BST or better yet BST +1 in the summer but then i'm darn sarf and don't do early mornings...

I was reading something at Jodrell Bank last weekend; apparently the scientific community is moving away from GMT as it's not accurate enough! Central Standard Time is the new darling, I think. Based on atomic clocks, how many grains of sand pass through an aperture of 2 microns in a gravity field of Pi R squared or something...
I bet the scientists still have to change their alarms clocks like the rest of us though.

I've been using UTC for many years logging times in my ham radio logbook, got 2 clocks in the "shack" which only match in the winter!

Mmmm the ROSA has been trying to get it changed for yrs as it causes many accidents when the clocks change in autumn.

As for farmers when has the time dictated when you tend to animals, or tend to the land.

And finally what is the point of having daylight at 4am, for it to be dark at 2100hrs.
