BS 4872 Coding

If you are doing your tests on fillets you need to do an overhead plus a vertical up to be covered for all positions, looking at what you've done already you should manage the overhead with not much trouble

I've not done any real overhead with stick welding, any tips on rod angles, travel speed, and rod types?

the employer signs you off,so if you know anyone in a position to do so....

Thats ok, I'll most likely to be in a job that involves welding in the next few months or so..hopefully!

To be honest there is a lot of urban myths and confusion around welder approval testing (coding). The level of skill required to pass a 6G pipe test to BS 4872 is only slightly less than to pass it to EN 287 or ASME IX and as for fillet tests the skill level required is probably going to be about the same.

I witness/inspect around 200 weld tests a year and by far and away the biggest failure rates are on 10mm leg length fillets in the PB position on carbon steel plate welded with MAG

Because guys tend to travel too slow or weave the arc about to try and produce far too big a weld in one pass rather than blast 3 quick stringer beads in

Thank you.....so even if your settings are ok, if you run too slow you will fail the destructive tests?

Travel too slow, lack of fusion, cold rolling etc etc

Un even leg length is one of the most common cock ups that can happen when trying to do a 10mm fillet in one pass. You can’t fight gravity and if your putting all that metal in slow and hot most of it is gonna want to sit on the bottom plate.
You end up with a 12x8 leg.
As well as the defects backpurge mentioned. Anything over 8mm you want to think about stacking or splitting or both depending on how big it’s got to be.

A question - I know some lads who will be soon taking their BS4872 Tee Fillet PF (vertical up). What criteria would be required to complete this, other than the successful pass of a destructive test?(leg length, throat thickness, etc)

Visual examination, ie stop/start, undercut, symmetry of leg lengths, etc etc. You really need to get a copy of BS4872 and read up on the acceptance criteria
