Brushes

My £10 makita plane stopped working,checked wire from plug to switch,ok,switch appears working,checked brushes,one was ok,plenty of length,but this one is suspect,can it cause the fault? Thanks.

Check for continuity with a multimeter across the brush holders.

I may be teaching you to suck eggs but some brushes have a sprung standoff pip in them to break the contact when the brush is over worn. Take the brushes out and check for that too (a ~2mm circular thing on the commutator face of the brush)

and check the commy to make sure no segments are burnt and loose that causes the sparking round it

if you post a pic im sure it will say if its a bit low

they should wear ruffly the same so should normaly be some where near the same lenth unless its become stuck or over heated

as said above look at the commutator (big brass looking thing the brushes run on)

brushes are cheap so it worth a try for 5 ish quid but worth putting a bit of time in clean the bit where they contact see if it looks burnt or as above loose

the brushes r junk.....cheap to replace....
for de3cent make of tool I always buy original when I can...
coz there's hard and soft carbon which can wear rapidly and or ruin the commutator....

As above, also check the commutator and it may be advisable to clean out between the segments with an old hacksaw blade.

Thanks,what I suspected looks difficult to get it apart the drive pulley looks like it requires extraction,limited space to get at the grooves without further dismantling.
