Broken cable

Hi all as this is my first post a bit of back ground. I bought a 25 year old land rover so its going to need welding. I am in the process of this but seem to keep breaking torches on my welder. I bought a SIP migmate 130 / 150 from a friend for £50. It works brill for the money but i keep having an issue with the torch cable where it joins the welder unit. its a bit hard to explain so a photo works wonders.



When wired in as the torch moves the plastic shroud seems to keep moving down the torch wires. This exposes the main big thick wire going down to the torch. i don't know what this wire is called. as it moves this is starting to fray the cable and is already broken approx 50%. the cable is to the left of the photo and seems to go inside the gold colored part. can this cable be removed and striped and put back in?

sorry for a newbie question but this is my first welder and not really sure what im doing.

also i have looked at euro torch conversion which seems a better connection. are these kits any good?

hi. i had put 2 cable ties around the plastic sheath, one still in the photo. it just worked its way loose and moved down. i was welding (well trying) today and i noticed the frayed part of the cable again. this is the second torch to do this.

it was tight. i loosened it of then took the photo. i have taken the gun out now to have a proper look at the broken frayed part.

The gold coloured part is a ferrule crimped onto the wire, without a replacement ferrule and an expensive crimper it's going to be difficult to repair

It might be possible to get the end repaired at a hydraulic hose maker. Failing that then maybe a 2" length of copper tube, split down it's length slip that and some heat shrink tube plus some hose crimp rings then remake the connection onto the brass fitting. Then slip the copper up to brass fitting. Crimp ring to close copper tube around braided copper cable (this carries the welding power BTW !) Now crimp the second ring around the copper tube at it's other end so it grips the black sheath. Then slide the heat shrink over it all and shrink it. Then put some edge protection around the hole that the torch goes through the body of the machine to stop it rubbing !
AND DON'T pull the welder by it's torch !!
