Britool pillar drill

I have this type of old Britool N.10 pillar drill (see pic) Mine has a different chuck in it.



Can anyone tell me where to get some info on it? All i can find out is that there is a pic of one in a pre 1933 school text book.

Yes indeed, that was the only online pic i found. Will put one of mine up tomorrow.

Fantastic drill, it took a merely a few seconds to go through a 1/4 inch mild steel plate.

ps: i bought it on ebay a few years back for £10 from a pensioner in Rhyl.

i surprised myself everytime i used mine.

i used it for everything, until one day i got a bit too excited changing a drill bit and the collets and springs dropped out of the chuck.

i tried for ages to repair it but it didnt work.

i couldnt get a replacement chuck for it either so i filed it under B

Here is a pic of mine, sorry about the phone picture my camera broke last month (3 days into my holiday)

You will notice mine has a different chuck. It appears to be a Jacobs type chuck with no 'key' tightener. It will be a shame if i cant find anything about these great old drills. I just had a quick 'go' of it and the gearing inside is nothing short of miraculous, the torque it produces to quickly drill through steel like the proverbial knife through butter!

My uncle (George Derbyshire) was the MD of Jacobs chucks for 30-40 years. He was loved by all his staff aways in profit and a great inventor, sadly the Americans bought the company out replaced him and went from a 2 million profit to a 1 mill loss in one year it eventually closed and is now been knocked down.

Re Jacobs, just noticed in my copy of Machine Tool Review, (Jan-Feb 1954 which arrived this morning, bl**dy Royal Mail) their parent company was The Jacobs Manufacturing Company, Hartford, 2, Connecticut, USA. So it looks like they were American owned all along.
