British Standards Certificate

Hi guys,

Just finished my welding course, which has served its purpose inthat I'm now pretty confident with a MIG, and have a "Kilmarnock College Basic Welding" certificate to put up on the fridge.

If I take the advanced course after Santa's been, I'll learn a bit more, get an "Advanced" certificate, and if I get enough test pieces done, will get some B.S. certificate.

Anyone know what this is likely to be, and whether its worth having? Would this be enough to get my foot in the door on any welding work?

Jobs in my line of work are thin on the ground at the moment, so interested in seeing if I've any other options...

I should have a BS certificate........ive spread loads of it over the years

Seriously though. I think you have probably got more papers than most MIG welders already. In many places MIG is classed as semi skilled at best. I dont necessarily agree with that but I guess it keeps the wages down.

well what do they say
"pay peanuts get monkeys" if you are good at mig, you will be good at flux core and thus be a flux core welder and get payed more.

and ave applyed for a few mig welding places (pay wasnt too bad) and i thourght some of the bits i did were poo and they said they were perfictly ok im not a QC guy, but i know what a good weld looks like

Hi Toddy,it is as Al and Mick have said regarding certificates,where i am currently woking in the "specials" department we have a Polish lad who is alright at straight forward 'point and press' work but lacks the finesse to do anything positional, no mma capabilities to speak of even on flat work, Yes you've guessed it we're all payed the same! Personally im always interested in learning something new and this latest recession can't last forever.If you find you enjoy the work and are interested to learn more then don't be afraid to ask questions of the more "mature" gent's at work,they often know a trick or two you won't find in a textbook even if they may appear a bit "Grisled" !

well i tend to go more towards the tig side of things(got an intervew next week in norwich) but i am not coded in mig or have done much, just the odd bit of playing att my old work.
and that looked ok after a few practis runs. but again, no one asked me for any certs about it. when i go for the tig stuff then they do since it is s/s stuff.
