Bridgeport Jhead.
I have a bridgeport with J head pulley version. Recently I have needed to tilt the head and while cutting I have had the drive dogs keep jumping out of drive.

Having looked at a video it seems like there a 4 springs when they strip it apart but I am not sure if they put pressure on to keep the drive dogs together.
If not what are they there for?

The drive dogs on the pulley have probably rounded over.

I haven't worked on a bridgeport, but on the copy I have worked on, there was one very large, powerful spring

Yep.. its in bits currently. But I am putting it back together.

I am back on this problem. Sadly I realized I cant actually fix the issue using a machine I have to take apart of get at the part to repair. So I started looking around for second hand parts as I was trying to do a job on the mill this morning and it now jumps out of drive all of the time.

I found some bridgeport spares on Aliexpress at 50 quid but they wont ship to me. https://www.aliexpress.com/i/1005001527365711.html It also says its made out of high quality aluminium.....mm not sure myself but I am pretty sure mine is made out of steel.

Secret sauce search terms seem to be 'clutch gear hub step'.

If you do repair it, and if the picture above is correct, it has seven splines so make sure your dividing head can do that number. Odd-tooth clutches were traditionally milled on a horizontal machine. With the correct width cutter, it does the left side of one tooth on entry and the right side of the opposite tooth on exit. Index six times and you are done.

This is part if the problem. I can't cut on the mill as the drive part will be missing.

Sadly not at the price I can afford.

Ok I have took it apart and whilst the drive dogs do have small lips it seems the bearing housing was jamming in the housing.

It also had only one compression spring in the housing and 2 just sitting in the pulley.

After stripping down it was clear there is something wrong . I have watched an excellent video and he seemed to have to press bearing housing onto the drive dog spindle I think mine just pushes on.
In fact when I took it of the bearing housing was spinning freely.

Even having watched the video I am.not sure if I remembered correctly. I will check tomorrow.
I am going to get a couple of bearing whilst it's apart. But can't find 1108 springs locally or on amazon or ebay.

One of the bearings in the dealing carrier is shot.
But I am not sure of the product ID.

It's a 3LJ35D, like it says. I think originally a RHP designation.
