Brazing Aluminium?

Can it be done? Anyone got any first hand experience of it?

SIF say so but I’ve never tried.

I have a broken casting to repair on a pump unit. It’s a crappy porous casting anyway and it’s a hydraulic pump so when it burst everything has been dosed in oil. I’ve no AC Tig, but could borrow one, but I’m not sure this’ll Tig as it’s so rubbish to begin with.

Wonder if braze / silver solder would do it.

The drive UJ seized and ripped the pump off its mounts I was told. It’s off a bobcat. I’ve not fully dismantled it yet, hopefully today, then I will supply pics. Just trying to think of a plan at the moment to fix it.

Lumiweld is good gear if used in the right application.

That looks the job Bob. It’s a mount bracket basically. It shouldn’t take much stress unless the UJ fails again but if that’s the case then even the OE casting will snap anyway.

I’ll order a kit and have a play. I may plate it somehow. I won’t know until I get it stripped how much extra room I’ve got. The thing is dying anyway. It’s just to get it through another season of pushing cow ****

I have used Lumiweld and Technoweld, had great results from both, As 8ob says above, My advice would be to watch numerous youtube video's and practice on some scrap first, Its a little bit of a juggling act, Torch, rod and stainless "stirring" rod, but good strong joints are easily possible,

What do you attach the “stirring rod” to while your 2 hands are full Gordon !!

There may be. That’s plan A. Ill know more once I’ve stripped it. Which is todays plan if the wind and rain stop.

It’s more the crap quality casting that’s putting me off tigging it rather than skill level, but there’s a bit of that too

Have tried a bit of the lumiweld stuff before and getting better but still not sure I'd trust it as a permanent fix for something like this. More due to my abilities than anything.

However, I'm comfortable enough using steel. In this sort of application, where weight, aesthetics and maybe space aren't too much of an issue, and if it's just the mounts that have snapped off, I'd consider building a cradle around it out of steel. Can tap into broken casting nubs and pick up on existing bolts. Maybe a backup plan.

I'll be surprised if it can't be TIG welded. This was a seriously dirty 95 year old cast that welded nicely with some determination.

What do you use for heating? I have a propane torch but it has a rather large nozzle and may only be good for thick aluminium. I have a DC TIG and have just found out in another thread that you can use a TIG for just heating (obvious really) do you think this would be good for thin Alu?

Th chine on the bottom is about the thickest part of the can as it doesn't get worked so much as the rest during the forming process.
