Brake flares

Hi my mk3 mondeo failed mot on rear brake pipes rusted
I am intending to replace them myself in kunifer pipe
using the powerhand flarer,I just want to know
if anyone has experience of this tool and what types
of flares do I need to form ie single or double?

yes easy to do with the tool

tools needed blowlamp, connectors and spanners to go with flaring tool

nip up and use but dont over tighten as they do break

blowlamp is for joining back to the metal pipe needs to be orange in colour and quick to flare it if fail do it again

ive got the tool and hand no issues with it , works great imo

i think you would want the din flares ?

No need for that. just use it as normal on steel pipes, works fine, did some yesterday as it happens.

just lube the tip of the flarer with brake fluid for each use

I've done plenty of mk2 mondeos and the rear brake pipes are routed through the sub frame.
you should be able to do two types of flares the "bulb" and double. I've always used the cheap clamp type with the dies. for the bulb you use the die and then the double is done on the bulb without a die.
the bulb is used as the male and the double is uses as the female. the double is a crushed bulb if that makes any sense.
I usually route the pipe the best way for installation then ise 3/16 p clips to hold it.

No need to use the blow lamp.

Just cut back to a place off good metal, but leave enough on the original to allow you to work.
It is more than you think.

The clips will brake, but cheep enough to renew.
both my local Ford dealer and a local parts place sell pipe kits make up. Either a complete run or short lengths with a joiner.

Have you looked down that road?

Hi, Personally I wouldn't join onto existing pipes, I would replace the whole run. You can't be sure of the originals integrity, it's been through too many pressure cycles and could be work hardened.

Thanks for all the replies, so if joining into an existing pipe put a single flare on one pipe and a double on the one to connect on?
Definitely not easy to get at I've already removed the rear sub frame and I'm hoping to get away without dropping the tank!
Some people advise rerouting the pipe around the tank but I'm not sure that acceptable in Northern Ireland.

On the video above the man seems to only mention using double flares is this the right way the join a pipe end for end?

If you are doing joins in pipe then good practice to put the double flare on the female fitting and a single flare on the male end.

2 double flares wouldn't seal correctly if at all.

A double flare fits correctly over the end of a single.

If you are buying a powerhand it will come with instructions.

the powerhand has arrived and there's instructions how to for the flares but not
when one or other is used,but you have made it clear double on female single
on male.

Hi, By and large yes, but check in the bottom of the hole to see which is needed.

I've also done plenty they come out in sections and are easier to replace from joint to joint instead of having to flare whilst in the car

I've joined plenty of existing pipes over the years never had a problem, plenty of garages also do it

I have joined onto existing brake pipes. So does my friendly MOT Garage.
Only have issues if you fail to prep. correctly.

If it was going to be an issue, it would not be a recognised MOT repair.

That tool will flare steel cold no problem
It is common practice to join in to a good section of pipe

I have done many maintenance jobs of my cars over
the years, just haven't done brake lines before and after researching
online decided to ask on here for further advice and as usual it was
promptly and helpfully given.
