eldest boy come this aft carrying a drill press.
pulled it from skip after asking thrwing stuff in it if he could have, got told no probs its duff.
had a rummage but all general rubbish left in skp.

he took it in shed changed fuse ( brought him up to start with basics) come back in saying runs perfect.

People are wasters now days.

Really annoys me. At work not so long ago the kettle had bust.......... found it in the bin! Looked in the plug and there wasn't even a fuse. I reckon someone had nabbed it for another item.

New fuse it and jobs a goodn'. Took it home for the workshop

Absolute result. Last year I heard about four Union Graduate wood lathes in the old school about 200 yards from my house. I went to see them and offered the Council 200 quid for the lot, they never even replied and just demolished the school on top of them!!!

I got a lawnmower on Freecycle "broken", new fuse and flogged it for £15.

Just folk today, more money than sence, i found a space heater in a skip, i asked if i could take it, ` yes but its knackered, makes a funny noise when running` i did the deed and in my workshop, well shed i found that all the problem was is that the 3 grub screws had come loose which let the fan touch the rear plate, worked great for 3 years after.

Just to lazy i guess.

you got a great find there and to think it saves you money makes it even better

I have an oscilloscope that came out of a skip and just needed a 20p transistor. Also a Peddinghaus bench guillotine that was left for the scrapman.
In the old days before the council tips got all organised, I used to blag old Commodore computer gear - computers, printers, plotters, disc drives, the lot - from people who'd moved over to PCs and were having a clearout.
Sold a massive job lot to my daughter's boyfriend for 50 quid (he's been my son-in-law for 9 years and still talks to me ) - over the years he's Ebayed the lot and made over £200 out of it.

speeds on drill are way to fast looking at what stink wrote down so might have go at making couple of pulleys for it.

he is a great kid first time he got paid from place he does welding when not at school, he come home and gave his mum 25% of it.
she wouldnt take it so went up shop bought bread pots etc came home and said ill give to you one way or other mum.

I wonder how many people used say the same things about our generation when we were kids?

My eldest is 9 and he picks up metal from the hedge to put in the scrap bin, finds lead weights on the beach that we then use to make new leads.

Recently on a walk he found a propane cylinder, insisted mum took him back in the car to collect it, turned out to be a 47kg and he dragged/rolled it all the way to the car. Must have been there years as it was dated 1973 and a company that hasn't existed for 20 years plus.

I love reading these kind of stories on here, other people proud because their kids get good grades or play football.

I'm proud because mine is finding scrap metal and can do a days work

Actually I'm quite lucky that my wife actually likes me fixing stuff. She's got so used to it she looks at people weirdly when they say they had a bloke round to fix the washing machine or paid £400 to get a £500 car through it's MOT

Our main TV for years was an old Ferguson I got from the tip and resoldered all the joints on the main board.

Every time I disappear with the trailer it's like Salvage Hunters when I get back, everyone waiting to see what I've bought now

Last year i got a meddings flott variable speed drill press out of a skip at work.
It had been condemed as it had a speed controler fault & stopped & started intermittently.
Few months ago had a go at it & found that it has a DC motor with an optical sensor that reads a segmented disc. The optical sensor was black with carbon dust from the brushes. Poor thing was blind! Quick clean & its good as new, Result!

I always got a bollocking and actually still do sometimes! from the old man for bringing "rubbish" home when I salvaged something for future use. It never stopped me though probably because I was encouraged by my grandfather who was a master of make do, re-use and mend - that skill / way of living was / is completely lost on the old man which always confused and annoyed grandfather and I.

We both kept stuff knowing that one day, when we had the right tools, that "rubbish" could be made into something useful - he never did manage to build up a workshop (other than woodworking / building machinery which was needed for his, now our living) but it never stopped him keeping an eye out for useful bits. His health started failing at the start of the year - it was the kick in the behind I needed to start getting machinery together and have since then invested every penny I can spare investing in and setting up a very decent drill press, Oil cooled Welder, 250Amp TecArc Mig, Metal Lathe etc to replace hand tools and budget or plain knackered gear that I had struggled with for years. I still have a few things on the list to buy sometime like a plasma cutter (or perhaps I should just rebuild the oxy/acetylene cutting gear he picked up at a local fab shop closure years ago and put it back into service).

Sadly he died just a month ago not really having seen it all pieced together and put to much serious use. All that stuff he and I collected over the years though is now coming in very useful - with some of it being turned into things that would cost a small fortune to buy (log splitter being one of the most useful so far and thankfully was something that was completed and working in time for him to see)

It is only now the old man will admit (barely, though) that we were right all along. He isn't quite so quick to moan when I turn up with more bits to add to the scrap pile anymore but does grumble when I can't give an answer to what I want it for just yet. I'd have loved to have had a father that had the same attitude to making /repairing things as my grandfather had as no doubt I would have been at my current ability 20 years ago should I have had and instead of wasting 3 years getting a science based degree I might likely have gone down an engineering route - which always was my first choice at school.

For those of you out there that can't interest your kids in the workshop - try again with your grandkids one day as you never know what it could lead to...
