I am about to make a squaredrop camping trailer. Looking fir advice on the box section i plan to use for the axle ( which the plates weld to that hold the suspension units) I am thinking of using 60 x 60 x 5mm box as the plates are 5mm thick. 8x4 trailer 1300kg. Would you think that is sufficient.

i did read up on this and theres a lot of info on this website with links to regulations
i think the general consensus was to modify an old one to your needs to bypass the rule, however if you want to build one the regs/compliance are fairly simple and then you can get it tested and plated but at a cost
ide like to know how you get on as ide love to build a utility trailer at some point

In the UK there is a one time test for trailers, bit like DIY cars. As you know, no DIY in France. ( currently trying to sort a trailer for my 550kg boat..)
Axle tube does sounds OK. but 1300kg is some camping trailer...

My plan is to build a square top camping trailer, I will IVA test it. That way its legal and will have a better resale value when the time comes.
Novice welder so there will be lots of questions. Just waiting on knott to verify the suspension i want to use with the 17” wheels. Which is one of the IVA regulations.

Is this a different trailer to the 8x4 one you wanted to keep below 750kg? Or has the design changed and now there is a new post?

For the sake of spending a tad more you can get an independant suspension braked unit in any width you like, that has all the guesswork taken out of it. Just need to worry about the chassis design. This will have a conformity tag and also does away with the headache of wheel alignment.

Have had a re think. After doing a rough calculation I will be between 600 and 700 kg. To be safe will go up to a larger weight capacity in case I go over.
