Nice job, I had a go with a wood lathe years ago, was really enjoyable making a couple of acorns for the stairs.
The 2nd one came off at full revs in an 8' x6' shed, it was like an exocet missile bouncing off the walls, could not believe how much force was in it and no idea how it managed to miss me...scary.
Always fancied another to fill some retirement time but think a couple of pre ownership lessons would be safer this time.
A chap on another forum I read does bowl turning on a pole lathe. Robin Wood's site. This might be a safer alternative and you can make your lathe as a project
I have not looked for them recently but there were some curved turning tools which allowed you to produce a bowl in a bowl in a bowl..... with minimum waste.
Japanese woodwork has always intrigued me too. Houses built to be dismantled by knocking out wedges!!! Cannot fault it.
I have a picture of a beautiful basket, but cannot locate it at present. I will sometime soon, I hope.
