Bought a hoist...

It's time to do less in the house and more in the workshop

So I scanned Ebay for 3-phase electric hoists to hang off me RSJ trolleys and won the bidding on a half-tonne Morris from days of yore. I dropped by Nottingham on my way back from RAF Marham and heaved this monster into my van. The princely sum of £11.50 changed hands.
I commented that it was pretty clean, unlike most industrial stuff you come across.
'Oh, it wasn't in a factory', came the reply, 'We used it to lift cows in our slaughterhouse...'

Did they use those before or after the venerable Clayton hoist? I remember an apprentice using a ladder to repair one, he was halfway up when the hoist started to roll off down the RSJ - you can guess where the top of the ladder was

We have a couple of Morris chain hoists. They lift a lot more than they should!

Are you sure its in working order , Place i first worked at bought a new morris one tonne hoist for the same err... application

It lasted all of two weeks , was replaced with a nice demag

I went to buy a old slaughterhouse once, it had all the carcass handling stuff in place still with rails and runners etc and a crane and hoist to boot, and the floor was concrete with channels leading off to a sump. Perfect for working on cars and stuff in with cleaning channels ready made.
Sadly although I offered the asking price, it was owned by a group of relatives and one of them wouldnt agree to the sale to pee off the rest of them. So it sits unused and empty to this day...

Once tried drilling through a concrete floor to get a feed up from DB in the basement, took us a while to work out basement was about 20 feet shorter than workshop above

It is now; the rubber 4-core cable feeding it (which still had a round, metal 4-pin connector with screw ring attached ) had started to disintegrate inside the hoist.
I rewired it with some nice new braided cable and (once I'd swapped two phases to get the thing running the right way round) it seems fine.
The data plate has been painted over so not sure how old it is, the only date code I can find inside suggests it may be 1982 but I thought it'd be older than that.

The shackle has a normal bolt through it. Needs to be changed for the proper pin, or the shackle changed. They are only pennies. I've seen one set up like that fail not so long ago.

And of course the set up should be load tested

Yep, well spotted! I was planning to hang it from the other RSJ trolley which is a fabricated monster, but the throat on the hanging hook wouldn't fit through the hole intended for it.

Load testing... If the workshop walls don't crumble, is that OK?

Had a near miss due to pin not being tightened at a place i worked ,all permanant hoists now have pins with secured nuts on ,,,,fitters still use normal shackles,we are trusted to tighten pins properly

I was taught to tighten pin then back off ¼ turn to stop it locking under load?

was taught to tighten till it wouldnt come undone, then wire aswell to stop it, but thats in marine, so might be abit different,

To be honest Stu ,i don't back off a 1/4 turn ,and slightly more than hand tight is more than enough,the problem shackle was used between two lifting frames ,and it was in operators daily checks to ensure pin was tight ,so each frame now has a dedicated shackle which is locked to frame by nut and split pin ........
