Bosch GSB14.4volt Li On cordless drill

I bought this new almost 2 years ago and have been very pleased with it. It's had a fairly hard life but not excessively so. Recently it has started to give off a strong, strange, 'ozoney' type of smell...it reminds me of the smell of my model train set - many years ago!!

I thought it may be the brushes but stripping it down I found the brushes are not replaceable, it has to be a new motor at around £30 ish.

I've cleaned it all up - there was a lot of grease around the gearbox - and put it back together and the smell doesn't seem as bad. It seems to be working fine so should I expect it to go 'pop' anytime soon or is this 'smell' usual??

If it's going to burn out it will start to get too hot to handle and then start throwing out dusty smoke. You should be fine though if you're not working it hard non-stop. We give our 18V Makitas tonnes of abuse but they rarely give up.

When you say the brushes are non replaceable what do you mean ? Most can be with a bit of jigger pokery ! Does it have the motor (brushes end ) end cap crimped ?

Hi..thanks for the replies. The (very small) motor is a sealed unit, and even if I could get at the brushes, they are not sold as spares by Bosch, only the complete motor.

For now, I'll put up with the strange smell as the drill seems to be working OK.......

I wouldn't about it personally, my 18V Hitachi does the ozone wiff thing occasionally (has done since new) it's more noticable when 'snapping' the trigger off due to the motor brake. Maybe the build up of grease/debris resulted in more sparks/arcing which in turn would = more ozone

My old Bosch 12 volt has done that since new and it's nine years old and still going mate
