Books or youtube channel on beginner metal work?

I would like to know different ways to make things properly. I mean - engineer them so they are strong enough and made of the right materials. I'm not sure what that is called exactly. Basically making things like ramps and heavy duty steel work benches, racking etc.
I'm not sure what this subject is called and where to begin. But I want to know how to do the proper calculations, for loadbearing etc. not just rely on making things out of super thick metal just to be on the safe side. Thanks.

Thanks do they deal with calculation on load bearing or do they just show you how to make things?

garage fab and TFS delve itno that sort of stuff occasionally, but its all automotive based, tfs does performance parts, garage fab is more slammed mini trucks although to be fair, they are both into mitsi mightmax trucks.

for calculations and what not i think practical engineering does a bit of that, and AvE has been known to go off ona tangent of 40 mins of calculations although he is more electrically based i think

Maybe show what you are making on here, someone will be able to point you in the direction of a relevant online calculator or even the technical term for the way whatever you are making is loaded, I had no idea that a beam being bent was called a moment load, that brought up much more relevant information when I searched online.

my experience is from wood

if you dont make doors and beams right many stuff fails

if you cut wood wrong and the same goes for steel everything is wrong

depending on what your planning making would it be advisable to get some assistance from a draughtsman/CAD operator who can run the calculations/models to give you an idea of what you need or want, then you can gain the experience working with a professional, taking your reading once you have some understanding.

I made car a stand and thought it should be something like 60 x 60 x 5 box. After asking on here I was pointed to a decent online calculator and made it out of the 50 x 50 x 3mm box I already had. It was nice to know it definitely wasn't going to catastrophically fail the first time it was loaded so I could try it and see the deflection. It deflected about 4mm, after adding some 25 x 3mm angle and some 5mm plates on the load points the deflection was almost nothing. The cost of the project went from about £100 I didn't have at the time to nothing.
